I have a soft spot for Jersey. This largest, most
southerly Channel Island is superbly placed
for holiday boating, with many fascinating
local anchorages and the French coastline only
two hours away for fast boats. Jersey has many
attractions ashore and some great watersports
for keeping families entertained.
In quiet weather, you can deliver a boat here
from the English south coast over a long weekend,
perhaps via Cherbourg or Alderney if coming
from the Solent area, or St Peter Port on Guernsey
if arriving from the West Country. The St Helier
harbour staff are used to boats being left in Jersey
and keep a close eye on them.
There are two snug marinas – St Helier Marina
near the heart of town and Elizabeth Marina set back from the
bustle. While the ferries to and from Jersey aren’t always reliable,
fl ying here to start your summer holiday is quick and easy from
airports all over the UK. Based on this agreeable island for a week
or two, you can take the weather as it comes and enjoy your boating
day by day, just like locals.

LOCAL DAY CRUISES
JERSEY SOUTH COAST There are several gorgeous sandy inlets
within a few miles west of St Helier for swimming, lunching and
chilling out. Portelet Bay, St Brelade’s and idyllic Beau Port are all
easy to enter using Admiralty Chart 1137.
LES ÉCRÉHOUS Only fi ve miles off Jersey’s north-east corner,
this unique cluster of reefs and islets has one of the most
intriguing anchorages you’ll ever visit. In quiet weather you
can lie off Marmotière islet over low water, land with the dinghy
and wander among exposed reefs, rockpools and golden sand.
