A
s I’ve written before,
when you choose to
lure fish is down to
personal choice but
for me the “season” is never
over and I relish the opportunity
to once again be able to target
river pike and other predators
throughout all the seasons of
the year.
Spring is a season of
reflection as this is the time that
I update my records in the
previous year’s log book and
start the new year with a clean
slate. If you are serious about
your lure angling then keeping
records can be a good idea for a
number of reasons. Firstly and
perhaps most importantly, it
allows you to accurately record
information that perhaps over
time you will forget, obviously
things such as location, species,
weight, weather, time of year,
lure used etc. and one of my
favourite’s - strange occurrences.
Secondly and perhaps just as
importantly, it allows you to
compare each year and as the
time passes you can see patterns
emerging and it becomes a
valuable tool to remind you to
revisit old venues and locations
- perhaps that forgotten 18lber is
now over the magic 20lb barrier.
Lastly, trying to recall all the
adventures, experiences, fish
caught, places and people fished
with can be like trying to push
smoke back down a chimney, it’s
impossible. A yearly log book
can capture all this for reference,
or it can just be a pleasure to
read and recount wonderful
2015 – A new year
and a fresh start
A new year beckons, fresh challenges await us, there’s new tackle to use
and I’m certainly excited about the year ahead says Nathan Edgell
memories, especially in those
times when we can’t get out
on the bank.
As a lure angler my season
doesn’t hold to the traditional
“autumn/winter” campaigns
and I follow the calendar in my
record keeping and predator
fishing. This year I’m going to
try my very hardest to get to
some of the events that the LAS
holds and hopefully I might
meet some of you there. At the
beginning of a new year some
may consider targets to aim for,
it could be a 4lb perch or a river
twenty pound pike and that is
absolutely fine, if you’ve done
this then I hope you achieve
every single one that you can.
For myself there are only ever
three targets I set and I gave this
subject some serious thought;
Have fun and enjoy my sport.
Avoid the dreaded blank.
Catch as many fish as I can.
Anyway enough about all
that, I’m sure as this issue hits
your mats spring will be in the
air. I love all the seasons as each
comes with it’s own challenges
and puzzles to work out and
spring is certainly no exception;
it’s a fantastic time for fishing
with lures. Of course, that said,
as we approach March the river
days are numbered and it’s a
time to get out on the bank as
much as you possibly can before
the close season. Love it or hate
it, the close season puts paid to
river lure angling for coarse fish,
but of course it’s not all doom
and gloom as for three months
I then switch to still waters and
something I intend to do more
of this year is to get out with
my lure rod on the canals.
