From studio pottery to the genius of Matisse youâll be

Entitled Wader this 1963 oil on canvas shows a woman striding into a lake or swimming pool.
Often described as the American Matisse Milton Avery was born in New York to a working-
class family. His radical abstract paintings focus on bold colours and unusual explorations of
shape which set him apart from his contemporaries. In Milton Avery an exhibition running
until the end of this month Londonâs Victoria Miro gallery celebrates the artistâs life and
legacy while exploring his creatively colourful landscapes gures and still lifes.

Fascinated by the languid luxury of the
Roman Empire Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema
made remarkable studies of domestic
antiquity. An exhibition at Leighton House
Museum Alma-Tadema: At Home in
Antiquity has been organised by the Fries
Museum in the Netherlands (Alma-
Tademaâs home country). Visitors can
expect to see a range of beautiful works by
the artist himself his wife Laura and
daughter Anna.
