a History of Millennia

The insitut de Monde arab is hosting a fascinating exhibition

devoted to the christian communities of the Near and Middle

east exploring the complexity of their history of millennia.

entitled chrétiens d’Orient 2000 ans d’Histoire (christians of the

Middle east 2000 Years of History), the exhibition brings together

some 300 exceptional objects including numerous masterpieces

some of which are being shown in europe for the fi rst time and

which in some cases have been loaned by the communities

themselves. illuminated manuscripts, mosaics and frescoes from

third century churches that are the oldest known to the world

are among the marvels on display. The show traces the religious,

political and cultural history of these christian communities from

antiquity to the present while showing how the Greek, coptic,

chaldean syrian, syrian, armenian and Maronite churches were

formed.
