expatriate community comprising about 2 million individuals.
Figures 1.11 and 1.12 show recent immigration trends to Spain and Italy
and, if anything, the preponderance of Moroccan immigration. The recent
surge in Moroccan migration to Spain has been phenomenal, and is one of the
most remarkable migratory phenomena of the early 2000s. Although these
f igures partly ref lect recent Spanish regularisations, there has undoubtedly
been a major surge in Moroccan immigration. Benef iting from geographical
proximity, this upsurge has largely been a consequence of the strong demand
