articles, two indicators measuring the output quality. Therefore, in this section, we

further calculate the research output per unit input.^3

3.4.1.1 NEAM Disciplines

It can be seen from Table3.27, the output per unit of each indicator of full sample

211Us increases to certain degree, and their coefficients of variation are narrowed

gradually year by year.^4

In order to illustrate more visually the trend of research output per unit input in

NEAM disciplines of 211Us, we calculate the yearly average of each indicator and

plot them in the line chart. See Figs.3.56,3.57and3.58for details.

It can be seen from Fig.3.56, the per capita SCI indicator is increasing steadily.
It can be found in Fig.3.57, the indicator of SCI per¥10 million is decreasing

all along, from 25.62 in 2006 to 17.34 in 2010.

It can be found in Fig.3.58, the indicator of TOPESI per¥10 million is in the

downtrend, and it plummets in 2009 and then rebounds to 0.14.

3.4.1.2 HSS Disciplines

It can be seen from Table3.28, the indicators of SSCI per capita and SSCI per

¥10 millionfirst increase then decline, while the indicators of Monographs per

capita and Monographs per¥10 million are decreasing all along.

In order to illustrate more visually the trend of research output per unit input in

HSS disciplines of 211Us, we calculate the yearly average of each indicator and

plot them in the line chart. See Figs.3.59,3.60,3.61and3.62for details.

It can be found in Fig.3.59, the indicator of SSCI per capita is generally in the

uptrend, going from 0.03 in 2006 to 0.06 in 2009, but falling back to 0.04 in 2010.

It can be found in Fig.3.60, the indicator of Monographs per capita is decreasing

obviously during thefive years, from 0.3 in 2006 to 0.17 in 2010.

It can be found in Fig.3.61, the indicator of SSCI per¥10 million is generally in

the uptrend in 2006–2009, approaching 11.43 in 2009 but falling back to 11.12 in

It can be found in Fig.3.62, the indicator of Monographs per¥10 million is

decreasing substantially all along, from 92.46 in 2006 to 11.12 in 2010.

(^3) Considering the small value of average of TOPESI and its smaller differences across 211Us, we
don’t calculate the per capita TOPESI.
(^4) Since TOPESI articles are very few, the outcomes of per capita TOPESI indicator is not reported
here.
