5.2.7 General Observations
A general description about the Chinese tourists derived from the key informants in
the new media and social media under study reads as follows:
During the past two decades, large groups of Chinese tourists from Mainland
China have used Thailand as their tourist destination. Popular destinations are
Chiang Mai, the capital of the North, the coastal areas along the Andaman Sea and
the South China Sea. The Chinese have chosen Phuket, Pattaya, and Bangkok as
their destination for decades. In recent years, even more Mainlandersflock to
Chiang Mai, mainly because of the success of the comedyfilm,“Lost in Thailand.”
Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are relatively small and cannot cope easily with the
