The panda is the darling of Asia,
because how could you not love
them? The big black spots over their
eyes are an evolutionar y feature,
meant to make their eyes look a
lot bigger than they actually are to
frighten predators away. Contrar y
to their original intention, these
eye markings only intensif y the
panda’s imploring expression: “Hug
me please!” The panda was once
classified as a carnivorous animal,
but having decided that hunting took
more ef for t than it was wor th, their
diet now consists of mostly bamboo,
which is an abundant food source
in their habitat. Given bamboo’s low
energy content, pandas have to eat
between 12 and 38 kilograms of
bamboo ever y day!
