Introducing the ezo momonga,
a flying squirrel found only in
Hokkaido, Japan. It lives high
up in the trees, and spends its
day chewing on pine needles.
In flight, the ezo looks like a grey
handkerchief gliding across the
snowy forest, but on the safety
of a branch, the ezo’s loose
skin folds into its body
and it is transformed into
a kawaii plush toy. If the
ramen isn’t reason enough
for you to make a trip to
Japan, consider the ezo
momonga the determining fac tor.The Ural owl lives in nor thern Asia,
in the snowy treetops of Japan and
Korea. While many owls have a
rather angr y look, this one has a
big hear t-shaped face with bright,
curious black eyes. Its tiny beak
is more endearing than menacing
(although perhaps less so for a
mouse!). It has a wide variety of
calls, and its loudest – used to
mark territor y – can be heard from
more than two kilometres away in
the dense forest!E
