This symbol has been associated with several
religions, but it originates from a par ticular faith. It
is called “Om”, and refers to Atman (the soul) and
Brahman (the universe). The syllable is often found
at the beginning and the end of chapters in the
Ve das, a divine text. Can you guess which religion
this symbol is connected with?

The yin-yang symbol has its roots in two
Chinese religions and philosophies (we are
unsure where exactly it originated!). The yin,
the dark swirl, is associated with shadows,
and the yang, the light swirl, represents brightness.
These two principles represent the interplay of
opposites in life. Which religion(s) is this ancient
symbol associated with?

This symbol showing a star and crescent moon
was once the emblem of the Ottoman Empire in
the 19th centur y. However, it gradually became
associated with the dominant religion from this
time, and is still used to represent this faith today.
