WOOD AND COAL
Coal is a non-renewable source of energy
because it takes millions of years to make.
Energy is trapped in decaying matter. The
top layers are transformed into coal, owing
to the heat and pressure from the Ear thβs
sur face. We mine coal from the ground
through sur face and underground mining.
Burning wood and coal is another means
of producing mechanical, electrical, and
heat energy. Coal can also be conver ted
into liquid or gas by adding hydrogen.
Burning coal for energy releases large
amounts of carbon dioxide into the
atmosphere β and so this fossil fuel is
also linked to climate change.
