In the 1930s, a new
government is formed in
Shanghai, and several
foreign powers carve out
for themselves sovereign
“concessions”. In the French
Concession, the big three
tycoons in Shanghai, Qiao
Aotian, Zhai Jintang and Gong
Xiaoshan, jointly establish
a monopoly, the San Keng
Company. Capitalising on
the opium trade, it gains
dominance over the area.
Junjie, an opium addict, is
caught red-handed stealing
some opium. He sustains
severe injuries when a
bouncer named Scarface
savagely beats him up.
Subsequently, Junjie’s father,
Qihua, is stabbed to death
while trying to save his own
son.

In the wake of these
events, the students who
are protesting against drug
abuse and the opium trade
also join the conflict. They
even set fire to the opium.
Hearing this, Aotian not only
decides not to pursue the
liability for the damage, but
also orders the release of
the student protesters.
Jintang is the first
Chinese Chief Inspector in
the French Concession. He

is so arrogant that he does
not even show respect for
their captain, Fiori.
Jintang takes Scarface,
one of Xiaoshan’s
henchmen, into custody,
which deepens Xiaoshan’s
negative outlook.

FRI OCT 13

new government’s drug
regulation, Chief Inspector

Zhenyue tries his best to

for effective implementation
of the drug prohibition law.
Aotian would like
their company to stop
participating in the opium
trade. Xiaoshan immediately
opposes this proposal.
Having returned from
France, Xiaoshan’s son,
Xueyao, gets together with
his good friends, Jingquan,
Zhaokuang, and others.
Jintang and the other
Chief Inspectors are
summoned by Wanjun,
who commands them
to implement the drug
prohibition law.
Jintang gets someone to
hide the opium stored in his
warehouse.
Jintang invites his
mistress, Zhu Qihong, to
perform songs in Paramount.
Though the lady boss,
Yao Guisheng, is afraid
her business might be
affected negatively, Jintang
emphasises that he is
actually the big boss there.
While Aotian is throwing
a party for Xueyao, Jintang
shows up unexpectedly.
Noticing them, Xiaoshan
