Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold

Writer Joan Didion has lived a life marked by generation-

defining reporting in the 1970s and gutting personal

tragedy in the 2000s. While her story is captivating,

the territory is well-trodden (especially in her own

work), and filmmaker Griffin Dunne, Didion’s nephew,

doesn’t find much to add in this biopic. The best bits,

though, do come from Dunne’s access: editors parsing

Didion’s singular skills; an appearance by her carpenter

and friend Harrison Ford; a quiet scene in which she

and Vanessa Redgrave, who both tragically outlived

their daughters, flip through old photo albums. Fans

craving a peek into Didion’s world may be satisfied,
