(singke) #1

The kind of equipment and skills they have, it’s amazing. I
want to be a part of all this, to add on to what I want to do
in the future, when I go behind the scenes.
You also have a film, Eric Khoo’s Ramen Teh.
Yes that’s wrapped and we’ve been doing publicity — we
worked with Japanese actors and just did a press con in
Japan. Actors in Japan are really down-to-earth and really,
really nice. It’s a breath of fresh air. (Laughs)
You mean actors here not nice?
(Laughs) It’s just that the Japanese actors are really
famous. One of them is a director and very well-known. For
someone of his status, he can behave like a big star, but
he’s really down-to-earth, and we need to respect that. As
you get bigger and better, it doesn’t mean you have to be
so full of yourself.

With this more arthouse film, are you trying to take on
projects that are as different as possible from your usual
roles? Like, reinvent yourself as much as possible?
I’m not out there to try to be arty-farty. I’m trying to do
things I love, which call out to me. When it comes to roles,
it’s like: Is there room for this character to develop and
shine? If the character is flat, there’s no point in taking it.
You said the universe showed you it was time to move
on. How did it do that?
I believe in the energy of the universe, and how it shows
you the way. If you don’t sense it, it will give you a kick in
the butt. No, I didn’t get a [literal] kick in the butt! (Laughs)
But [a change] is something I’ve been thinking about for a
while. It’s just being very aware that this was something I
wanted, and about timing and things falling into place.
