Religion still has a profound

role to play in the monarchy

on his 1994 comment that he
would like the title of
Defender of Faith, and now
wishes to use Defender of the
Faith, as usual.
Turn a coin over to the
“head” side and alongside the
monarch’s image, it has F D
— Fidei Defensor, the Latin
for Defender of the Faith.
That is an honorific title
rather than a constitutional
role, as supreme governor of
the Church of England is, but
it clearly matters. The Queen
has shown that it can give the
monarch a role throughout
the UK, as someone who
leads the nation in worship at
important moments and by
example too, while being
supreme governor has a focus
on the national church of just
one part of the kingdom:
England.
At one time the Prince of
Wales appeared to fall out of
love with the Church of
England, resentful of how
some clerics had commented
publicly on his marriage
troubles. Prince Charles
appeared to stop attending,
bar the big public occasions.
Now though, his faith seems
more assured. So he will be
an Anglican king yet also,
like his mother, one open
to the importance of other
denominations and religions
in the life of many Britons.
As the political power of
the monarchy has waned, it is
the person of the monarch,
not just as the embodiment of
the Crown but the individual,
who has mattered more. In
other words, character and
what shapes it, such as
religious belief, matters.
Somehow, as we reach the
middle years of the 21st
century, the new king will
need to find a way to speak to
the nation, offering both
something that indicates the
legacy of his mother and
something different. Rather
like Christianity, the
relationship between faith
and the monarchy has to find
a way to both be always the
same, yet always changing.

Catherine Pepinster’s book,
Defenders of the Faith — the British
Monarchy, Religion and the Next
Coronation, is published by Hodder
on June 9

mercy, justice and
righteousness by embodying
those same qualities.
These ideas were
remembered during the
Queen’s coronation service in
1953 with Handel’s great
anthem, Zadok the Priest,
sung at every coronation since
that of George II. Its words
from the Book of Kings,
“Zadok the priest and Nathan
the prophet anointed Solomon
king. And the people rejoiced”,
celebrate Solomon as a kingly
ideal, full of wisdom and
humility. The anthem is linked
to the most sacred moment in
the coronation, that of
anointing, when the monarch
commits their life to God and
to the people.
In her Christmas Day
broadcasts, the Queen has
spoken increasingly
frequently of how Christian
teaching has provided the
framework of her life, while
also acknowledging the
importance of other faiths in
Britain today. In these final
years of the Queen’s reign,
attention is turning to the
succession. The new king’s
coronation service is likely to
be shorter, with
contemporary Britain
reflected in more diverse
guests and some way for
Christian denominations
other than the Church of
England, and even other
faiths, to be included in the
Anglican service. Some have
argued that in 21st-century
Britain, with growing
numbers of agnostics and
atheists, a secular coronation
should be considered.
Discarding a coronation
service with links back more
than 1,000 years to King
Edgar’s crowning in 973, and
conjuring up a new ceremony
without the meaning, ritual
and sense of transcendence
that religion offers would be
an extraordinarily difficult
task. As any anthropologist
will tell you, religion provides
remarkable scaffolding for
rites of passage, and this is a
rite of passage par excellence.
Nor is it likely that Prince
Charles would advocate such
a thing. Although he has been
linked to innovation as Prince
of Wales, he is also a lover of
tradition and has rowed back

T

he flags are up, the
posters printed, the
street parties
planned. The
Platinum Jubilee,
marking 70 years since
Elizabeth II’s accession, is the
fourth jubilee of her reign
after silver (25), gold (50) and
diamond (60). Given that the
monarchy in this country is
inextricably bound up with
Christianity — the Queen is
supreme governor of the
Church of England and holds
the title Defender of the
Faith, used by all monarchs
since Henry VIII — all the
jubilees have been marked by
church services of
thanksgiving.
Such a service is also
appropriate because the idea
of a jubilee derives from the
Book of Leviticus in the Old
Testament, where the jubilee
was a special anniversary,
marked by good works such
as the emancipation of slaves.
Biblical ideas of kingship
have also powerfully
influenced British notions of
monarchy. We won’t know
until the day whether the
Queen will be able to attend
the Platinum Jubilee service
at St Paul’s Cathedral on
Friday, but it is likely to
express similar sentiments to
the 2012 Diamond Jubilee
service held there. Then, God
was asked to “bless thy
servant, our Queen” with the
hope that she would be
“persevering in good works
unto the end”, while the
specially written collect spoke
of “God, whose son reigns as
servant not master”.
This idea of Jesus Christ as
a humble servant runs
through the gospels, as does
the importance of a
particular form of kingship in
the Old Testament. Kings
were seen as an antidote to
anarchy, bringing stability
after years of unrest, but were
also understood to act as
spiritual pointers to God’s
