HeneverforgavetheDodgersforleaving
Brooklyn.AftergraduatingfromGeorgia
TechwithaBSinEngineeringandgetting
hisMBAwithdistinctionfromtheHarvard

BusinessSchool,hemettheloveofhis
life,Barbara,andmarriedherin1962.He
workedinmortgagebanking,thenreales-
tateasapropertydeveloperandowner,
settlinginsuburbanMarylandinthe1970s.
Hehadalifelongpassionforcollecting—and
wasdeeplyinvolvedintheJamesRenwick
AllianceCraftinsupportofAmericancon-
temporarycraft.IncontrasttohisBrooklyn
roots,helovedtheAmericanWestandcut
alarger-than-lifefigureinhisdailyattire.He
enjoyedwearingacowboyhatandboots,
accentedbycolorfulsweaters.Hewas
generoustoafaultandwoulddoanything
forhischildrenandgrandchildren,whoal-
waysbroughtasmiletohisface,despitehis
curmudgeonlymottoinlateryears,“Every-
thing’saggravation.”
Hewaspredeceasedbyhisparents,Rose
andGerald,andhisyoungerbrotherSte-

StateAuditor.Duringherten-yeartenure

herhusbandcouldreceivemedicaltreat-
ment.Afterhisdeath,sheremainedthere,

LeagueofWomenVoters,wheresheserved
asCo-President,assistedwithvolunteer
coordination,andwasareporterfortheir
publication,ReportfromStateCircle.She
washonoredasa50-yearLeaguemember

andplayingbridge.

hoursintheB-52alone.WhileintheAir
Force,hewasproudtobeaninstructorpilot
ofalltheSACplanesin existenceduringhis
service.BobservedthreetoursinVietnam,
includingayearduringthe100-manrule.
BobwasquotedinLIFE’sTheVietnamWars
50 YearsAgo–TwoCountriesTornApart:“I
wasfromablue-collarfamily.IfeltIwas
veryprivilegedtogotopilottraining.Itwas
abigstepupforme.Itwasaprivilegeto
serveinthemilitary.Ilovedthemilitary.The
B-52wastheKingofBattle,andatthetime
Iwasaveryenthusiasticwarrior.”Following
retirementfromtheAirForce,Bobworked
forNationalSystemsManagement,L3and
theBallisticMissileDefenseAgency.Latein
life,Bobreturnedtothemilitaryasacivilian,
servinga30-monthdeploymentin Kabul,Af-
ghanistan,teachingAfghansoldiershowto
flyairplanes.Bobcelebratedhis70thbirth-
dayonhislastdayin Kabul.

Otherthanflying,perhapsBob’smostfa-
voriteendeavorwashisoysterfarmonthe
RappahannockRiver.Begunasahobby,An
AllAmericanOysterCompanygrewfrom
producingafewthousandoysterstomil-
lionsofoystersayear.AtonepointtheAAA-
OCwasinthetop10%ofoysterproducers
inVirginiawithfivetoeightfull-timeem-
ployees.Knownbyfamilyasthe“cottage,”
theoysterfarmwasBob’shappyplace.
BobwasborninAuburn,Nebraska,to
CharlesPhillipandHelenLeonaHohmanon
August15,1940.Whenhewas6yearsold,
thefamilymovedtoOmaha.BobmetMary
AnnePeterataCYOdancein Omahaduring
hissophomoreandherfreshmanyearof
highschool,andtheymarriedin 1963 after
MaryAnnegraduatedfromcollegeandBob
graduatedfrompilottraining.Inadditionto
hisundergraduatedegreefromUNO,Bob
earnedaMaster’sdegreefromtheUniversi-
tyofSouthernCalifornia,aswellasdegrees
fromtheArmedForcesStaffCollege,and
theNationalWarCollege.
Bob’sgrandchildrenmadehiseyeslight
up.Boblovedtowatchhisgrandchildren
playsportsandwasanavidfanoftheir
recleague,highschool,andcollegeteams,
whichincludedpracticallyeverysportFort
HuntYouthAthleticAssociationoffered,
GeorgetownVisitationfieldhockeyandla-
crosseteams,Gonzagalacrosseandgolf
teams,Yalewomen’slacrosse,Yalemen’s
golf,UNCmen’slacrosse,andHolyCross
women’slacrosse.Bobnevermissedan
opportunitytoseehisgrandchildren,and
oneofhislastoutingswastoGrandparents
DayattheBasilicaofSaintMarySchoolin
earlyMay.
SurvivorsincludeMaryAnnePeter,his wife
of 59 years;daughterAnne;daughterMary
(Chuck)ZinsnerandtheirchildrenAddie,
Teddy,PJandSally;sonBobby(ErikaMell-
man)andchildrenRJandMax;hissister-
in-lawJudy(thelateDon);hisbrotherMar-
shall(Cathy);andover 20 nieces,nephews,
great-niecesandgreat-nephews.

afamilyinPotomac.Itwastherewherehe
battledsquirrelsatthebirdfeeder,launched
hisloveofgolf,woreoutinnumerouspairs
ofwalkingshoesexploringthearea’smany
trails,anddisappointedthousandsofkidsby
handingthemtoothbrushesatHalloween
(trickortreat?).Neverwasthereabetter
husband,father,grandfather,uncle,friend,
neighbor,ordentist. Ineachrolehemet
peoplewithwarmth,kindness,generosity,
andhumor.Hejoinshispredeceasedwife,
Tsutae,andissurvivedbyhissisterGer-
trude;histhreesons,Neal,Jeff(Brianne),
Alan(KimMenhinick);hisbelovedgrand-
daughterCatherine;andseveral niecesand
nephews.

ert,aForeignServiceOfficer,traveledthe

Coast,Togo,Senegal,NigeriaandSouthAfri-
ca(atthetimeofNelsonMandela)aswellas
MilanandFlorence,Italy.Sheembracedlife
in eachoftheseplacesraisingfivechildren,
teachingschool,andwritingandpublishing
poetry.
Anitawasasuperbcookandhost,anavid
reader,aloverofbirds,andfoundinspiration
andwonderinthegrandeurofourNational
Parkswhereshehikedwithherfamily.In
herpoem“ACommotionofBirds”shere-
flects:“TheancientGreeksbelievedthesoul
departssoaringfromourmouthsasbirds.I
imaginethekindofbirdwilldependupon
thelifewe’veled.”
In 1997 sheandherfamilyreturnedtothe
USandsettledinReston,VA.Sheissur-
vivedbyherhusbandof 58 years,Robert;
herchildrenAlisa,Matthew,Therese,Adrian
andFlorence;hersisterLouiseandbrother
Pat; andsixgrandchildren.
