Brad Northrup of Bethesda, Maryland,
passedawaypeacefullyon the nightof May
26, 2022.The causeof deathwasmultiple
myeloma.
Raisedin Johnstown,NewYork, on the edge
of the Adirondacks,Bradwas the oldestof
five childrenbornto Jane Clemansand Har-
oldBradfordNorthrup.Hegraduatedfrom
HobartCollegein 1964,receivedan MBA
fromthe Universityof Buffalo,and years
latercompletedaMastersofPublicAdmin-
istrationat Harvard’sKennedy School.The
courseof his 40-yearcareerwithThe Nature
Conservancymirroredthe evolutionof the
organizationitself.
Hiredin 1972as one of the first profession-
al employeesof TheNatureConservancy,
Brad devotedhis careerto buildingthe
capacityof the organizationas it grewinto
the world’slargestconservationNGO.He
beganasassistantdirectorofdevelopment
in the nationalofficeand shortlythereafter
left the DC areato establishandstaffthe
Conservancy’sfirst regionalofficein Boston
andcreatestateofficestocarryoutconser-
vationprojectsin the easternUnitedStates
in concertwithvolunteerchapters.Among
themanyprojectshis staffsuccessfully
completedduringthoseearlyyearswas
the MashomackPreservein NewYork--a
spectacular2,350-acrestretchof woods
andcreekswithelevenmilesofcoastlineon
ShelterIsland.If you fly overthe forkedtail
of LongIsland,you can see it fromthe air.
In the late 1980s,Bradmovedto internation-
al conservationwork,launchingthe Carib-
beanProgram as the Conservancypursued
itsbroadermissionofprotectingnatural
diversitybeyondthe UnitedStates.During
his yearsin theLatinAmerican-Caribbe-
an Program,he workedto secure reliable
stewardshipof“paperparks”intheregion
throughthe Conservancy’sParksin Perilini-

tiative.DuringhislastfewyearsattheCon-
servancy,heservedas directorof the Con-
servationStrategiesteam,whichaddressed
cross-cutting scientific issues,including
climatechangeand the protectionof fresh-
waterandmarinesystems.Fromfundrais-
ing to globalsciencechallenges,Brad’s
responsibilitieschangedasTNCbroadened
and deepenedits mission.He respondedto
eachnewchallengewithenergyandopti-
mism.Afterhis retirement,he continued
his workin internationallandconservation
as chairmanof the boardof the globallyac-
tive ConservationCoachesNetwork.There,
asalways,heledfromwithin--nevercalling
attentionto himselfbut liftingandbolster-
ing his colleagues.Brad’slegacyliveson at
the Conservancyin scoresof talentedstaff
whomherecruited,hired,andmentored.
He waslovedand respectedat workand at
homefor his buoyant,irresistiblegoodna-
ture,his wisdom,andhis kindness. Aworld-
ly,capablecontemporaryman,heembodied
timeless values:courage,responsibility,in-
tegrity,courtesy,anddevotiontocommu-
nity.Hewas funnyandardentandadven-
turous--seriouswhengravitywascalledfor
andslylyhilariouswithfriendsandfamily.
Hedelightedinhisneighborhood--Brook-
mont,Maryland,whichsits on abluff above
the C&OCanal--andwasactiveon its civic
leagueboardfor years.And he wasproud
to volunteeras a“quartermaster”for Lock-
house6throughthe C&OCanalTrust.
Bradissurvivedbyhiswifeof 38 years,Jody
Bolz;his children,Molly(JabeBloom),Eli,
andJessie(MarkPatterson)andgrandchil-
dren(Macaulay,Em, Mae, and Gus);and his
foursiblings,Jim Northrup,NancyCook,Liz
Loper,and KathyHansen.The familyhopes
to holdan outdoormemorialserviceat
WoodendSanctuaryinChevyChase,Mary-

ty Divisionof the U.S. Departmentof Justice,
andMaryAnnPoteatSchaffer(GaryWayne
Schaffer),theManagingDirector-Systems
ChiefPilotfor UnitedAirlinesand an attor-
ney,and his grandson,MaxPoteat-Garrett,a
middleschoolstudent.
In additionto the loveandcomfortof his
family,Gene’slast dayswerebrightened
by his daughterMaryAnn’sdogs,Bella and
Bodie,who remainedat his bedsideuntil
the end.
Throughouthis life,Gene keptaletterfrom
his commandingofficer,who wrotethat,if
Genechosenot to becomeamilitaryofficer,
he wouldlikelyfind successas a“songand

old. Richardson,whoprofessionallywentby

talented,funny,loving,andenergeticsoul
whomadeall whoknewhimbetter.His
friendshipto manyandloveto his family
and friendswasand will remainacherished
gift for thoseof us fortunateto havecrossed
pathswithChip.Heissurvivedby his wife,
PatriceKehoe,and theirchildren,Eva Rich-
ardsonandherhusbandBenPenn,Will
Richardson,and AnnaRichardsonof Univer-
sity Park, Maryland,as wellas his brother

familymovedto Cincinnati,Ohio,and Chip
graduatedfromWalnutHillsHighSchoolin
1971.In 1975,ChipreceivedaBachelorof
FineArtsfromthe Universityof NorthCaro-
lina,wherehe met his wifeand fellowartist,
PatriceKehoe.HereceivedaMasterof Fine
ArtsfromWashingtonUniversityin St. Lou-
is in 1977.AlongwithPatrice,hejoinedthe
facultyat the Universityof Marylandin 1978,
wherehe wenton to playan integral role in
the growthand developmentof the Depart-
mentof Art. ChipbecameaFull Professor
in 2011and servedas Chairof the Depart-
mentof Art from 2011 through2020.He will
be fondlyrememberedby his manyformer
studentsas an engaging,challenging,and
funnyteacher.
Chip’swork has beenfeaturedin 21 solo
and over100 groupexhibitionsin museums,
galleries,and art centersin Washington,DC,
NewYork City,and numerousotherstates,
as wellas internationallyin Belgium,Russia,
Jordan,and Algiers.Hereceivednumerous
grantsandawardsfor his work,including
sevenMarylandStateArtsCouncilVisual
Art Fellowships.Commissionedartworkis
permanentlyinstalledat RonaldReaganNa-
tionalAirportandRestonTown Center.His
workis heldin numerouspublicandcor-

Center(NC),the U.S. Departmentof State
(Algiers),the Districtof ColumbiaTown Hall,

others.Chip’swork is representedby Addi-

marriedto Patricefor 43 years.Chip and

the first grandchildfor Chipand Patrice,this
June.Laughterandlovewereconstantsin
theirhome,with Chip’sendlessenergy,love

music,and joy permeatingtheirlives.Chip
madeampletimefor his childrenand their
activitiesby workinglongnightsat the stu-
dio.Hecoachedhis kidsand theirfriendsin
soccerand tee-ball,and designedand paint-
ed the stagesetsfor the annualmusicalsat
UniversityPark ElementarySchool.
Chipwasavoraciousreaderwithan im-
mensecuriosityaboutmanysubjects.After
yearsof familybeachvacations,Chip and
Patricespenttheirlateryearstravelingto
newcitieswithgreatrestaurant scenes.You
can’treallywriteaboutChipwithoutmen-
tioninghis passionfor Universityof North
Carolinabasketball.He followedthe team
throughouthis life,with aspecialjoy for
sharingtextsduringgameswithfamilyand
friends.Inrecentyears,Chip had becomea
devotedfan of the WashingtonNationals.
It hasbeensaidthatChipnevermeta
stranger.Hecultivatedimmediateand last-
ing friendshipsovertheyears,beginning
withhis Carolinaclassmates,University
facultyandgraduatestudents,numerous
friends in theart world,neighborhood
friends,and his pokerbuddies.For more
than30 years,heplayedpokereveryThurs-
daynightwithaclosegroup,hardlyever
missingagame.PhonecallswithChipwere
ajoy (a sometimeslengthyjoy)andfre-
quentlyendedwiththe otherpersonsitting
in his or her car in theirgarage,havingar-
rivedhomeafterwhattheythoughtmight
be aquickcall to checkin. He lovedlife and
madeall whoknewhim betterby his sheer
positiveenergyandinterestin others.He
is,asJamesThurberwrote,that “rare soul
whosespiritgetsmagicallyintothe hearts
of [peopleand]leave[s]behindsomething
thatis morereal and warmlypersonalthan
bodilypresence,anineffableandeternal
thing.” His memoryis to be treasuredand
we are fortunateto havehad our livesen-
hancedby knowinghim.He is lovedand will
be greatlymissed.

Thomas,Kelley(MichaelLeonette)and Ben-
jaminand five adoringgrandchildrenPeter,
Avery,Lucille,Olivia,and Axel.Tedhas four
siblings:Tyree Tinsley,LetitiaKashani,Thom-
asTinsley(deceased),andScottTinsley.
As aboy,Ted was wellknownfor his accom-
plishmentsin baseball.He graduatedfrom
McLeanhighschoolinVirginiaandearned
his undergraduatefromEastTennessee
Statein BusinessAccounting.Ted servedin
the tankdivisionof the US Armyduringthe
Vietnamwar andwashonorablydischarged
in 1972.He marriedSusanBerryLujackon
February9, 1979.Tedwas the ChiefFinan-
cialOfficer(CFO)foranumberofcompanies
overthe courseof his professionalcareer.
He wasmostproudof his timeat Computer
DataSystemsInc.(CDSI),whereheserved
as CFOandVicePresidentfor nearly 30
years.Not onlywashe proudof the compa-

ny he helpedto build,butofthe friendships
thatbeganthereand lastedalifetime.
WalterandMadaTinsleylivedinVirginiafor
morethan70 years,makingFalls Church
theirlongeststandingand finalhome.Both
wereactivein the Episcopalchurchand
instilledintheirchildrenastrongsetof
Christianvalueswithaparticularempha-
sis on serviceto others.Ted wasafaithful
Christianwhocarriedforwardthosevalues
andbeliefin communityservice.Over the
courseof his life,hevolunteeredin various
capacitiesfor the DarnestownCivicAssoci-
ationwhereheandSusanresidedfornearly
30 years,St. MarthasEpiscopalChurch,and
multiplesportsteamsandyouthorganiza-
tions.
Tedand Susanbothsharedagreatloveof
readingandthe theater.Ted in particular
hadapassionforlearningaboutAmerican
History,Rock nRoll, and Americancarsand
trains.Hewas alifelongfan of the Wash-
ingtonRedskinsandenjoyedplayinggolf
andgettingintoshenaniganswithastead-
fast groupof friendsthroughthe years.He
wasaloverof all creaturesbig andsmall.
Togetherhe and Susanrescuedand raised
countlessdogsandcatsoverthe spanof
theirmarriageand routinelycontributedto
anumberof organizationsthatfocusedon
thehumanetreatmentofanimals.
Tedwas akind and generousman.He was
adevotedand lovingfatherand grandfather.
He wasaman whofoundjoy in the simple
thingsandwantednothingmorethanto
spendtimewithfamilyand friends.

nian,Mrs.Trebingwas the daughterof Ra-
leighWickershamChristieand Alice(Relyea)
Christie,who had movedto the Districtfrom
NewYork Cityin on January1, 1924.Mrs.
Trebinglivedin GloverPark andgraduated
fromWesternHighSchool(Classof 1945)
andtheUniversityof Maryland(Classof
1949),whereshe was amemberof the Alpha
DeltaPi sorority.Itwas in CollegePark that
she met the loveof her life,Harry MartinTre-
bing.Aftergraduation,Mrs.Trebingserved
in the ExecutiveOfficeof the Secretariatat
the US StateDepartment(whereher father
servedas Chiefof the OperationsBranch).

She wasamemberof the US Delegationto
the seventhGeneral Assemblyof the United
Nationsin 1952-1953.Shelaterworkedin
theWashingtongovernmentaffairsoffice
of PanAmericanWorld Airways,leavingin
1958 uponher marriageto Dr.Trebing.They
remainedveryhappilymarriedfor 61 years,
untilhis deathin 2019.
Throughouther life,Mrs.Trebing wasanac-
tive member of the communityvolunteering
withmanynonprofit,charitableand civicor-
ganizations.She wasproudto havebeena
long-timememberoftheLansing(Michigan)
chapterof the Daughtersof the American
Revolution.
Mrs.Trebingissurvivedbytwodevotedsons,
HarryEvan(andhis wife,Jody)andDavid
Martin.In addition,she is survivedby four
lovinggrandsons,HarryGeoffrey(andhis
wife,Anjanette),Christopher(andhis wife
Crystal),Patrick,and Matthew(andhis wife
Brittany),and agreat-grandchild,Georgiana.
Sheisalsosurvivedbyherlifelongfriendand
cousin,MillicentFitzgerald,of LongIsland,
NewYork. Mrs. Trebingwaspredeceasedby
her brother,Keith RelyeaChristie.

Hibbing,Minnesota,the first of fourchildren
of HomerandRennaMary(Degnan)Web-
ster.His childhoodwasspentfishingand
playingbaseballandhockeyas his family
followedhis dad’sU.S.Steelcareeracross
the northwoods,fromDuluth,Minnesotato
Dorval,Quebecto PortCartier,Quebec.An
avidlearner,Craig’sacademicpursuitsled
himto St. FrancisXavierUniversity,where
he graduatedin summacumlaudein 1966,
beforecompletinghis MBAat BucknellUni-
versityin 1967.Uponcompletinghis MBA,
Craig joinedthe U.S. Air Force and enrolled
in officertrainingschool.Whileachieving
the rank of Captain,his toursof servicetook
him to Thailandand eventually,SouthKorea,
wherehe methis wife,Chong-Cha(C.C.)
Chon.The twoweremarriedon March27,
1971,andmovedbackto the U.S.,where
Craig enteredcivilianlife,eventuallysettling
in Marylandto beginhis career,while pursu-
ing his JurisDoctorin the eveningprogram
at GeorgetownUniversity,whichhe com-
pletedin 1976,the sameyearthe couple
welcomedtheirson,Thomas.
Following stints with Litton Industries,
theLogisticsManagementInstitute(LMI)
andSPCTechnologies,his entrepreneurial
dreamsled Craig to ElectronicDecisionsInc.
in 1985,wherethe familysettledin Mahom-
et, Illinois.The consummatehusbandand
father,Craig balancedhis loveof workwith
his family,wherehe nevermissedoneof
Thomas’games,takingtimeto fish and en-
joy life in the localcommunity.In1994,Craig
and C.C. returnedto the eastcoast,making
theirhomein NorthernVirginia,closeto
familyandfriends.Craig returnedto LMI

to finishhis professionalcareer,retiringin
2014.From there,hetook on his nextcareer
in supportingC.C.’s real estatepracticeand
keepingher companyat openhouses.
Aman knownfor his big heartandcaring
nature,Craig wasrecognizedas aconfi-
dante,teacherand mentorto friends,family
andcolleagues.Craig exudedaquietdig-
nity thatbeliedasteelydeterminationand
strongmoral compass.His wry smileoften
indicatedthathe waseitherreadyto playa
prank,shareajoke or revealhis thundering
velvethand.Craig’s heartylaughcouldbe
heardat familygatherings,fromdinnersat
PekingGourmetInn to holidaycelebrations.
Afoodloverthatenjoyedsharingand pre-
paringmorethaneating,his sweettooth
led himon questsfor largechocolatechip
cookies,Koreanpastriesand Klondikebars
to sharewithcolleaguesand family.Anavid
outdoorsman,his passionswerekindled
growingup on the Iron Rangebut werelater
sharedwithhis familythroughtheirmany
weekendtripsto the WyeRiverand numer-
ous summervacationswithboatin tow.A
musiclover,Craig learnedto playthe guitar
as ateenagerand pickedit up againin re-
tirement.He enjoyedthe creativewordsand
harmoniesof songwritersandperformers
suchas Simonand Garfunkel,JamesTaylor,
the Eaglesand CSN.Craig lovedsportsand
wasafiercelyloyalfan to his teamsthatin-
cludedthe PittsburghSteelers,Washington
Capitalsand NorthwesternWildcats.Always
curiousand caring,he wasaferociousread-
er andwriter,and lovedsharingrelevant
newssnippetsor recipeswithhis familyand
circleof friends.Craig tookpridein writing
the mostheartfeltandthoughtfulbirthday
and holidaycards.
Craig is survived,and will be deeplymissed
by,his wifeof 51 years,C.C.; his son Thom-
as (Theresa);brothersScott(Frances)and
Reid(Jennifer);niecesSaraand Elise;sis-
ter RennaMary(Thomas);brothers-in-law
Chae-Hyuk,Chin-Hyuk,Yong-Taek(Annie)
and niece,Caroline,Johnand nephewsNiels
(Kelly),Dennis(Carly)and James;alongwith

and formercolleaguesand friends.
