1962,wascommissionedintheU.S.Army
asasecondlieutenant. Afterhisfirstas-
signmentwiththe101stAirborneDivision,
Mr.BrownleevolunteeredfortheArmy’s
rigorousRangerSchoolandgraduatedas
itsDistinguishedHonorGraduateinMarch
1965.Hethenjoinedthe173rdAirborneBri-
gade-arrivingasthefirstU.S. Armyground
combatunittobecommittedtoVietnam.
Inthefallof1965,Mr.Brownleetookcom-
mandofaninfantrycompanywithaprima-

theDongNaiRiver,referredtoasWarZone

flight.Toreducetheirchancesofdrawing
enemyfire,thepilotslandedatnight,with
theirlightsextinguished.Brownleespent
theeveningandfollowingdaymeetingwith
soldiers,listeningtotheirexperiencesand
offeringencouragementandpraisefortheir
service.Hehadbeeninofficelessthantwo
monthswhenhemadetheChristmasvisit,
butit establishedapattern.Withlittlefan-
fareandnopressattention,Brownleehas
spenteveryholidaysincetheninthefield
withsoldiers.
In addition to his outstanding career
achievements,Mr. Brownleelovedhisfam-
ily,andalwaysmadethemapriority.He
cherishedhischildrenandwasalovingand
devotedgrandfather.Hewasagreatstory-
teller,andhislaughwasinfectious.
Aftermanydecadesofloyalservicetohis
country,Mr. Brownleedevotedhimselfto
beingadependableandloyalfriendtothose
aroundhim.Heenjoyedtravelingandwas
anavidreader.His weekendsweretypically
spentcheeringontheDallasCowboysand
theAlabamaCrimsonTide.Hewasalways
upforalate-nightmovieoradocumentary
ontheHistoryChannel.Heenjoyedspend-
ingmanysummerdaysonthelakewithhis
family.Tohis granddaughters,hewas“Pop-
Pop”andhewaspresentforeveryschool
play,musical,andballetrecital,oftenwith
red,white,andblueflowerbouquetsin-
hand.Hislegacywillliveoninthelivesof
everyoneheimpacted.

toRehobothBeach,Delawarewherethey
sharedmanyspecialtimeswithfamilyand
friends.
Shewasadevoteddaughter,sister,wife,
mother,grandmother,auntandfriend.Her
warmthandlaughterwerecontagious.She
hadaquickwitandalwaysprovidedsound
adviceandashouldertoleanon.Shehad
manypassionsovertheyearsincluding
tennis,Washingtonfootball,bowling,cross-
wordsandfirstandforemostsharingspecial
momentswithfriendsandfamily.
ShespentherlastnineyearsatKnollwood
ArmyDistaffwherethedevotedstafftreated
herwithtenderlovingcare.
