A
palpable sense of
occasion defined the
opening of this year’s
Guild of Aviation Artists’ annual
exhibition, on July 9... the day
before the Royal Air Force’s 100th
anniversary flypast over the capital.
Many classic RAF types featured
among the 388 paintings at this
stunning show, whose keynote
speaker was the guild’s patron, Air
Chief Marshal (ret’d) Sir Glenn
Torpy GCB CBE DSO.
The tone was set by Graham
Henderson’s montage in oils, named
RAF Formation: 1918-2018, as
it also adorned the cover of the
event’s sale catalogue and comprised
a Sopwith Camel, Spitfire,
Canvas WingsWings
Rupert Cordeux’s A Work in Progress, portraying a forlorn F-4 Phantom II in a scrapyard, secured
the Aviation Painting of the Year Award. ALL PAINTING IMAGERY - GAvA
A splash of colour and the human element made Anthony Cowland’s entry, Irony: Foe
Now Friend, a standout inclusion. It depicted a Handley Page Halton delivering
supplies during 1948’s Berlin Airlift.
