edical student Maria
Ladenburger, 19, was
one of life’s good
people. As well as
studying to be a doctor, she
volunteered at various migrant
shelters in the German city
of Freiburg.
One night in October 2016,
she’d gone to a party, then
cycled home. Sadly, danger
was lurking in the form of
Hussein Khavari.
Khavari lunged, knocking
Maria from her bike.
He then strangled and raped
the popular student, but sheB
est friends Cheyenne
Rose Antoine, 21, and
Brittney Gargol, 18, were
enjoying a night out in
March 2015 when things took
a dark turn.
After getting into a heated
argument, Antoine strangled● GERMANY ● CANADA ● UK
was still alive when he left
her on the bank of the
river Dreisam to drown.
When Maria’s body
was found later that
morning, police launched
a manhunt.
At the scene, they had
found a long black hair
partially dyed blond.
CCTV revealed a
teenage boy on a local
tram who also had hair
matching that description.
Khavari.
Officers traced him, and
found his DNA matched
samples from the crime scene.
Khavari was arrested – and,
during a trial in September
2017, the Apple
iPhone Health
app was used to
help convict him.
Authorities went
through the app
on his phone and
learned what kind
of physical activity
Khavari was
participating
in on the day of
Maria’s murder.
They discovered that a large
bulk of his activity consisted of‘climbing stairs’. They took
down the information and
made a correlation between
the time it would have taken
Khavari to drag Maria’s body
down the river bank and then
climb back up.
An investigator of a similar
build to Khavari
went to the scene
of the crime to
recreate how the
police believed
he’d disposed of
the body. The
investigator’s Apple
Health app activity
correlated with the
information on
Khavari’s phone.
In March 2018, Khavari
admitted rape and murder,
and was sentenced to life.Maria was
