strands of embroidery floss, except

where otherwise noted.

Cut out the embroidered flowers

and leaves by eye, at least a^1 ⁄ 4 in

outside the stitching for needleturn

appliqué. As usual, you will need to

snip the allowance at inside corners

where petals meet and do a number

of snips where the shapes curve

inwards. When all the appliqué

shapes are ready and the vase has

been sewn down, pin all the fl owers

and leaves in place so you can see

the whole arrangement. Rachel

recommends you pin everything

before you start sewing as you may

need to adjust each element’s

position as you go. When the fl owers

and leaves are appliquéd, you should

be able to see some of the cream

fabric – it is not meant to completely

disappear. Appliqué the elements in

the following order:

• Start with Flower 2, then Flower 1


• Proceed to Flower 5, then Flower 3
  and Flower 7


• Appliqué Flower 4, Leaf 6, then
  Flower 8, followed by Leaf 11 and
  Flower 9


• Next appliqué Flower 10, Leaf 12,
  Leaf 13 and fi nally Flowers 14.
