Australian Homespun - June 2018

(nextflipdebug5) #1
PREPARATION AND CUTTING

1

Trace the circle from the Pattern
Sheet onto paper and glue it to
cardboard. When the glue is dry,
cut it out on the line.

2

From the white homespun, cut:

  • Seven strips, 11in across the
width of the fabric and crosscut 20
    squares, 11in (block backgrounds).

3

From the large pink spot print
fabric, cut:

  • Five strips, 2^11 ⁄ 2 in across the width
    of the fabric (Border 1).

4

From the aqua fl oral spot print
fabric, cut:

  • Six strips, 6^1 ⁄ 2 in across the width
    of the fabric (Border 2).

5

From the pink on pink spot print
fabric, cut:

  • Seven strips, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in across the
    width of the fabric (binding).

6

Trace around the circle template
on the wrong side of the 20 spot
print squares. Cut them out carefully
on the lines.

WEDGE BLOCKS

7

Fold the 20 circles in half
horizontally and press the fold
lines lightly. Unfold, then fold the
circles in half vertically and press the
folds. The creases should mark four
equal segments on each circle.

8

Repeat Step 7 with the 11in white
squares to mark four equal squares
on them.

9

With right sides facing up, insert
a pin at the intersection of the
creases at the centre of a circle and
then into the point where the creases
cross at the centre of a white square.
Aligning the creases of both layers,
smooth out the circle and pin it

evenly to the background square.
Repeat this step for all 20 blocks.

10

Thread the top of the machine
with a colour to match one of
the circles and put white thread in the
bobbin. Set the machine to blanket
stitch if you have it – otherwise a 2 x
2mm zigzag stitch can be used. Test
the stitch on some scraps to make
sure the stitch size and tension are
correct – you might need to loosen
the top tension slightly.

11

Appliqué the coloured circles
to the white squares using

matching threads. Sew with the
straight part of the stitch sitting
along the edge of the circles and the
horizontal bites going into them. Start
and stop the stitching on a crease so
the join will be hidden in the seams
later on.

12

Re-press the creases if needed.
Cut along the creases to yield
80 quarter-circle Wedge blocks.

13

Turn the blocks over and
carefully cut away the white
fabric behind the coloured quadrants,

(^1) ⁄ 4 in from the stitching.
