Working on a large fl at surface
or a design wall, arrange all the
coloured Wedge blocks in mixed groups
of four to make circles again. Lay these
squares out in fi ve rows of four. Move
the individual wedges around until
you have a pleasing mix of colours
distributed over the quilt. Take a photo
of the layout when you’re happy with it.

15

Working on one unit at a time,
sew the Wedge blocks in pairs,
making semicircles, and press the
seams open. Matching the centre
seams and edges of the circles, sew
the pairs together and press the seam
open. It doesn’t matter if the edges of
the white fabric don’t match exactly
as they will be trimmed later. Return
each square to the layout as you go.

16

Using a quilter’s ruler, trim all
the units to measure 10in

square, raw edge to raw edge. To do
this, place the ruler over the block
with the 5in line on the ruler lying
along the centre seam of the block,
as shown in Diagram 1. Trim the first
edge. Repeat the process on all four
sides, making sure that the 5in line
on the ruler is aligned with the centre
seam each time. Return the blocks
to the layout as you go.

ASSEMBLY

17

Join the blocks in rows. Debby
pressed all her seams open,
but you can also press the seams of
odd rows to the left and even rows
to the right so the intersections nest
in the next step if you prefer.

18

Sew the rows together,
matching the seams, and press
the seams open or in one direction.

Measure the width of your quilt
horizontally across the middle
and trim two of the 2^11 ⁄ 2 in strips of

large pink spot print fabric to this
length. Sew them to the top and
bottom edges of the quilt, matching
the centre and end points, and press
the seams towards the border.

20

Matching the pattern as
closely as possible, join the
remaining large pink spot print strips
end to end and press the seams open.
Measure the length of your quilt
vertically down the centre and trim
two strips this length from the long
strip. Sew them to the left and right
edges of the quilt, matching the
centre and end points, and press
the seams outwards.

DEBBY’S
TRIMMING TIP Use
round-ended scissors for trimming
away the white background fabric
behind the wedges so that you
don’t accidentally cut the printed
fabric underneath.

DEBBY’S
LABELLING TIP
To make an easy quilt label, type
your message on your computer
using a font resembling
handwriting, enlarge it a little and
print it out on paper. Cut a piece
of white fabric a little larger than
the printed area and press under
a narrow hem on all sides. Trace
the lettering onto the fabric with
a permanent fabric-marking pen
and set the ink with a hot iron.
Pin the label to the back of the
quilt and slipstitch it in place.
