CUTTING1
Divide the 36 fat eighths into four
groups of nine and label the piles
Set 1, Set 2, Set 3 and Set 4. You can
cut a few layers at a time in the
following steps, but not all nine at once!2Referring to Diagram 1, from each
fabric in Set 1, cut:- One square, 4^11 ⁄ 2 in (A)
- Four rectangles, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x10^1 ⁄ 2 in (B).
3
Referring to Diagram 1, from each
fabric in Sets 2 and 3, cut:- One square, 4^1 ⁄ 2 in (A)
- Four rectangles, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x8^1 ⁄ 2 in (C).
4Referring to Diagram 1, from
each fabric in Set 4, cut:- One square, 4^1 ⁄ 2 in (A)
- Four rectangles, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x6^1 ⁄ 2 in (D).
5From the solid white fabric, cut:- Six strips, 5^1 ⁄ 2 in across the width
of the fabric and crosscut 36 squares,
51 ⁄ 2 in (H – block centre background) - Six strips, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in across the width
of the fabric and crosscut 12 strips,
21 ⁄ 2 x20^1 ⁄ 2 in (sashing) - Eight strips, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in across the
width of the fabric (Border 1).
6From the solid red fabric, cut:- Three strips, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in across the
width of the fabric and crosscut eight
rectangles, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x5^1 ⁄ 2 in (E); eight
rectangles, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x4^1 ⁄ 2 in (F); and two
squares, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in (G).
7From each of the solid teal and
lime fabrics, cut:- Four strips, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in across the width
of the fabric and crosscut eight
rectangles, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x5^1 ⁄ 2 in (E); 16
rectangles, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x4^1 ⁄ 2 in (F); and one
square, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in (G).
8From the solid navy fabric, cut:- Four strips, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in across the
width of the fabric and crosscut eight
rectangles, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x5^1 ⁄ 2 in (E); 16
rectangles, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x4^1 ⁄ 2 in (F); and two
squares, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in (G).
9From the solid pink fabric, cut:- Three strips, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in across the
width of the fabric and crosscut four
rectangles, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x5^1 ⁄ 2 in (E); 16
rectangles, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x4^1 ⁄ 2 in (F); and three
squares, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in (G).
10From the white and grey spot
print fabric, cut:- Eight strips, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in across the width
of the fabric and crosscut four
squares, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in (cornerstones). Set
the rest aside for Border 2.
11From the navy check fabric, cut:- Eight strips, 2^1 ⁄ 2 in across the
width of the fabric (binding).
INSIDE OUT BLOCKS12Rule a diagonal pencil line from
corner to corner on the wrong
side of the 36 print fabric A squares.13With right sides together,
position a marked A square
on the lower right corner of a white H
square, as shown in Diagram 2. Stitch
on the marked line and trim the seam
to^1 ⁄ 4 in. Press the block open. Make 36
of these AH units.14Referring to the quilt
photograph as a guide to colour
placement, sort the cut fabrics into
nine groups to make the individual
blocks. For each block, you require:- One G square
- Four matching E rectangles
- Eight matching F rectangles
- Four matching D rectangles
- Four matching C rectangles
- Another four matching C rectangles
from a different fabric - Four matching B rectangles
- Four assorted AH units constructed
in Step 13.
15Referring to the Block Layout
Diagram, join an AH unit to the
left and right edges of an E rectangle.
Press the seams towards the E
rectangle. Make two of these units.16Join an E rectangle to opposite
sides of the G square, pressing
the seams away from the square.17Lay out the centre part of the
block in three rows, as shown
in Diagram 3. Sew the rows together,
pressing the seams towards the centre.

wrong side of all the B, C and
D rectangles: draw the lines on oneDiagram 1
