Australian Homespun - June 2018

(nextflipdebug5) #1
half of the rectangles in one direction
and on the other half in the opposite
direction as shown in Diagram 4.

19

With right sides together, place
a D rectangle on the corner of
an F one, as shown in Diagram 5.
Stitch on the marked line, trim the

seam to^11 ⁄ 4 in and press. Make two
of these DF units.

20

To complete the Extended
Flying Geese unit, place a D
rectangle with the line drawn in the
other direction on the corner of the
DF unit as shown in Diagram 6. Sew
on the marked line, trim the seam
to^1 ⁄ 4 in and press. You should have
a Flying Geese triangle in the middle
of a long strip. Make two of these units.

21

Repeat Steps 19-20 to
construct all the Extended
Flying Geese units CFC and BFB. You
should have a total of eight Extended
Flying Geese units as follows:

  • Two DFD units, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x12^1 ⁄ 2 in

  • Two CFC units, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x16^1 ⁄ 2 in

  • Another two CFC units, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x16^1 ⁄ 2 in

  • Two BFB units, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x20^1 ⁄ 2 in.

22

Lay out all the units, referring
to the Block Layout Diagram

  • the pairs of CFC units can be
switched if the colours work better.
Stitch the two DFD units to the top
and bottom of the centre unit. Add
the two pairs of CFC units to opposite
sides of the block in turn, then finish
with the two BFB units at the left and
right edges. The block should measure
201 ⁄ 2 in square, raw edge to raw edge.

23

Repeat Steps 13-22 to make a
total of nine Inside Out blocks.

ASSEMBLY

24

Referring to the Quilt Layout
Diagram, lay out the nine blocks
in three rows of three in a pleasing
colour arrangement. Rotate the middle
block in Rows 1 and 3 and the outer
blocks in Row 2 by 90 degrees. Add
a white 2^1 ⁄ 2 x20^1 ⁄ 2 in sashing strip
between the blocks in each row.

25

Sew the blocks and sashing
strips in rows, pressing the
seams towards the sashing.

26

Lay out a sashing row between
rows of blocks: each sashing
row has three white 2^1 ⁄ 2 x20^1 ⁄ 2 in
rectangles and two white and grey spot
21 ⁄ 2 in cornerstone squares. Join these
patches together in rows and press
the seams towards the sashing strips.

27

Join the block rows and
sashing rows, nesting the
seams at the intersections, to
complete the centre panel.
Borders

28

Join the remaining 2^1 ⁄ 2 in solid
white strips end to end and
press the seams open. Do the same
with the spot print strips.

SAMANTHA’S
FABRIC TIPInstead of
the print fabric fat eighths, you can
also cut the ABCD patches from
a combination of a jelly roll and 36
charm squares if you have these
pre-cuts. Cut the A squares from
the charm squares and the B, C
and D rectangles from 2^1 ⁄ 2 in strips.
