12: DESIGN THE RUSTY HOUSE

LOCATION NORTHLAND

Set within a dwelling wrapped in 150 sheets of

pre-weathered steel, this panelled kitchen has

a distinct fl air that refl ects its singular exterior.

Sheets of plywood in the same dimensions as

the steel used to clad the outside of the house

were laid on a grid of black battens throughout

the interior of the home, giving a negative-detail

pattern that runs through the entire space and is

mirrored on the outside of the house. A concrete

aggregate fl oor serves as the foundation for the

monotone kitchen, tying in with the polished

concrete benchtop. Concealed appliances sit

behind plywood cabinetry, which matches the

panels that run up the walls and across the

ceiling. Unique strip LED lights are inset into

the ceiling panels, supplementing the natural

light that streams into the kitchen through

fl oor-to-ceiling glass panels that overlook the

ocean. The warm tones refl ected in the overt

use of timber lend a warmth and homeyness

to the environment that would be much

needed on blustery winter days by the sea.

13: DESIGN NUNDAH HOUSE

LOCATION NUNDAH, QUEENSLAND

Dubbed the New Queenslander, this unique

home in Nundah redefi nes the notion of classic

Queensland architecture. A large family home

built to accommodate three generations, the

Nundah House consists of wide open spaces

featuring a prodigious use of timber and a fresh

white palette. The open-air kitchen contains

contrasting grey cabinetry that provides relief

from the white, but ties in nicely with the grey-

veined stone benchtop on the large kitchen

island. Floating above the modern lines of the

kitchen, a timber-lined roof that mirrors the

fl oor is an exciting design element. A large

sliding glass door that fully retracts into the

wall allows the room to be opened up to the

deck for the ultimate in alfresco dining.
