10: DESIGN HEMP HOUSE
LOCATION TARANAKI, NEW ZEALAND
Awash in country charm, this rural property in
Taranaki, New Zealand, represents the warm
and homey aesthetic desired by homeowners
Greg Whittam and Gayle Avery. “We both
wanted something that looked Mediterranean
and rustic and that wasn’t too polished and
new,” says Gayle. The open-plan living/dining/
kitchen area is scaled to fi t their large family of
six. The timber dining table with turned legs is
scaled just right for extended family gatherings,
with the long marble-topped timber island
providing additional seating when the crowd
grows. Traditional white cabinets enhance the
classic look of the space, even as the stainless-
steel appliances let you know they mean
business. In the end, this rather streamline
kitchen is both effi cient and warmly welcoming.

11: DESIGN CATALINA HOUSE
LOCATION AVALON BEACH,
NEW SOUTH WALES
In a truly innovative design, this renovated
bungalow on the Northern Beaches of Sydney
incorporates a kitchen that can be fully opened
to the outdoors. Wanting to take advantage
of their bushland location, homeowners the
Quarrys chose to incorporate large sections
of the building that would open to the exterior
setting, resulting in a light-fi lled kitchen
with good ventilation. Set in the middle of
a long linear space that runs through all the
communal areas in the home, this simple
kitchen features Corian benchtops and light-
toned fl at-panel cabinetry running fl oor to
ceiling along one wall, cleverly concealing the
fridge. A mammoth kitchen island sits in the
centre of the space and houses the work area
— oven, stovetop and sink — with a plethora
of storage beneath and benchtop seating
for casual dining. Large sliding glass doors
retract into the kitchen walls to open up the
adjoining dining room to the elements, creating
a connection with nature that would make
slaving away over a hot stove a joy (almost!).
