10: DESIGN THE RUSTY HOUSE
LOCATION NORTHLAND
Refl ecting the “shanty-ness” of the
surrounding rural area, this modest bach in
the Northland area of New Zealand’s North
Island is a hardy dwelling made to withstand
the natural environment in which it resides.
In keeping with the industrial nature of the
home’s aesthetic, a concrete aggregate fl oor
was laid throughout much of the home. The
elegant fi nish of the fl ooring is warmed by the
prodigious use of timber — fl oors, walls and
ceilings — throughout the home and helps
it to sit comfortably within the sometimes
harsh landscape without feeling too cold. “I
wanted to design something that was cutting
edge, yet has a connection to this little bach
settlement, and I think it has achieved that,”
says architect Ken Crosson.

11: DESIGN STILT HOUSE
LOCATION PUKERUA BAY, NORTH ISLAND NZ
When budget is a concern, thinking outside
the box can force you to make a choice you
wouldn’t normally make — but isn’t it nice
when it all works out. Unable to fi nance

his holiday home project independently,
homeowner Guy Marriage pooled his
resources with members of his extended
Wellington-based family to design a modern-
day Kiwi bach at Pukerua Bay. With site issues
relating to the harsh coastal conditions and
a tight budget, construction required the use
of materials that would meet both concerns.
The material of choice? Plywood. Using this

throughout the interior, including as a fi nished
fl oor product, addressed the family’s worries
regarding budget and durability in a coastal
environment. “Overall, the building has been
designed to fi t into the context of the site and
not look out of place,” says Guy.
