12: DESIGN BRUNSWICK HOUSE
LOCATION BRUNSWICK, VICTORIA
Using prefab construction to meet a
tight renovation deadline, this double-
fronted terrace in Brunswick, Melbourne,
is a contrasting mix of old and new — both
modern and contemporary in nature.
Employing a monochromatic palette, the
interior spaces help to highlight unique
aspects of the site. The open kitchen/dining/
living space is grounded by slate fl ooring
in a soft grey that shows a great deal of
movement through veining patterns and tonal
shifts. The hardwearing fl ooring harks back
to the Victorian infl uences of the original
dwelling, but with a new contemporary face
that helps to tie the old section of the house
to the new modern extension.

13: DESIGN MOUNT ALBERT HOUSE
LOCATION MOUNT ALBERT, AUCKLAND
The form of this family abode in Mount
Albert was based on the concept of three
interlocking cubes all in diff ering materials.
The contrast between timber, metal and
concrete materials is a stunning feast of
textures and colours that harmoniously blend
in unexpected and pleasing ways. The wide-
plank timber fl ooring running throughout the
lower level is a rich honeyed hue that matches
the kitchen island, but contrasts in a ‘warm
vs cool’ colour battle with the grey concrete
walls. Both add tactile elements in their own
way — one smooth, one rough — to create a
visually eff ective space.
