LOCATION NUNDAH, QUEENSLAND
Taking the preconceived idea of a traditional
Queenslander and then turning it on its head
is a bold move, but it’s certainly paid off. Thishome in suburban Brisbane pays testament
to innovative thinking and great design. “The
house is located on a tree-lined street among
an eclectic mix of Queensland vernacular
character and modern homes,” says architectJoel Alcorn. “We wanted the building to politely
sit somewhere in the middle.” The home’s
interior is a mix of warm timber, white on white,
with opaque glass; it’s modern with an earthy
twist. In the kitchen, a suspended linear white
bar light sits comfortably over a generous
island bench, off ering ample task lighting.

LOCATION NORTHLAND
Steve Wilson and Wendy Grell were drawn
to the relaxed Northland region and decided
to build there so they could split their time
between their Auckland home and the small
Northland community that holds special
memories for them. Their home is a rusty
shanty-looking abode clad in pre-weathered
steel sheeting. It has glorious views to
Taiharuru Bay. The kitchen, dining and
lounge spaces are lit by strip LED lighting
— the layered eff ect of the lighting is both
decorative and functional.
