15: DESIGN STILT HOUSE
LOCATION PUKERUA BAY, NORTH ISLAND NZ
With stunning views over Pukerua Bay on the
North Island of New Zealand, this family bach
(beach house) off ers year-round delight to the
extended family that built it from the ground up.
Designed to fi t into the context of the site, this
modern-day holiday home features a prolifi c
use of large windows and glass doors that
encourages natural light to fi ll the open living
spaces indoors. In good weather, large decks —
one between the dwelling’s two forms and one
on the ocean side — provide ample space for
family and friends to gather and enjoy the ocean

vistas. This friendly residence is a curious hybrid
of traditional and modern design that celebrates
the classic Kiwi bach.
