14: DESIGN CHAMFER HOUSE
LOCATION MORNINGTON PENINSULA, VICTORIA
Reminiscent of the era of ‘romantic rationalism’
in which it was fi rst created, the main living/
dining rooms of this architecturally designed
1970s masterpiece feature vast vaulted timber-
lined ceilings of post and beam construction that
instantly brings to mind the term Great Room.
A glass wall opening out to the deck allows in

plenty of light, making the room feel virtually
cavernous. Turning some of the dated elements
around to fi t a more contemporary lifestyle was
the aim when modernising this architecturally
outstanding dwelling. “A key part of our
masterplanning strategy was to locate the living
rooms upstairs, which enabled the two living
areas to fl ow into one another or be shut off with
a big pivoting wall panel. Another strategy was

to ensure each living space and bedroom opened
directly to an outdoor area,” explains architect
Warwick Mihaly. In doing so, Chamfer House has
become a home of carefully balanced modern
sophistication with strong ties to the past.
