The Caledonia boys finally
beat East Kentwood, but they
were still No. 2 Saturday.
That is still great.
The Caledonia varsity
boys’ track and field team was
second to Zeeland West in a
tight competition between the
top three teams at the MITCA
Team State Finals Saturday,
May 28, hosted by Byron
Center.Zeeland West took the
team championship with 1145
points ahead of the Scots’
1144.5 points and East
Kentwood’s 1141. The
Caledonia boys were second
to East Kentwood in the OKRed Conference this spring
and at the team’s MHSAA
Division 1 Regional Meet the
previous weekend.
Teams may enter three
individual athletes into each
event and one relay team into
each relay race at the MITCA
Team State Finals and each
finisher scores for the team.
The Scots got off to a great
start on the track with the
senior filled 4x800-meter
relay team of Josh Oom,
Donavan Mattson, Andrew
Adams and Caden Dixon
winning in 7 minutes 58.
seconds.
The Caledonia boys had a
number of runner-up finishes.
Senior Mason Powers was
second in the pole vault at 14
feet 3 inches. Sophomore
Jordan Gutierrez was second
in the high jump by clearing a
personal record height of 6-4.
Junior Jordan Domany was
second in the 3200-meter run
in 9:50.64 and Dixon placed
second in the 800-meter run in
1:58.87.
The 3200-meter run was
one of the Scots’ top events
with three finishers in the top
five. Senior Cooper Sorsen ran
his PR in the race, 9:51.53, to
place third. Mattson was fifth
in 9:55.48.
Caledonia also had three
top ten finishers in the pole
vault with senior John
Malinowski and Lucas Miller
both clearing 11-0 to tie for
ninth.
The Scots’ just missed
three top ten finishes in a
couple of other events. Colin
Witvoet cleared 6-0 to place
seventh in the high jump and
senior Paul Dailey improved
his PR in the event to 5-8 toplace 11th.
In the 1600-meter run, the
Scots had Mattson sixth in
4:30.02, senior Benjamin
DeGood ninth in a personal
record time of 4:36.40 and
Oom 11th in 4:37.61. In the
800-meter run behind Dixon,
the Scots had Adams eighth in
2:02.99 and sophomore Ayden
Duffin 13th in 2:07.7.
Ethan Berends had a
couple of top ten finishes. He
was fourth in the 100-meter
run in a personal record time
of 11.17 seconds and ninth in
the 200-meter dash in a
personal record time of 23.25.
Other top ten
performances for the Scots
came from David Carey and
Witvoet in the 400-meter
dash. Carey was eighth in
52.78 and Witvoet ninth in
52.89. Sophomore Owen
Hager was tenth in the 110-
meter high hurdles in a
personal record time of 15.
and also placed 20th in the
300-meter low hurdles in a
personal record time of 44.36.
Scot senior Caleb
Paarlberg was third in the shot
put with a mark of 48-1.5 and
11th in the discus at 125-0.
Theron Sanders, a junior,
improved his PR in the shot
put to 43-7.5 to place ninth in
that event.Powers added a top ten
finish in the long jump with a
mark of 19-11.75. Gutierrez
was seventh in that event at
20-6.5.
Other scorers for the Scots
in individual events included
Mason Osterhouse, Carlo
Aybar, Jacob Snyder, Carter
Tufts, Dalton Ed, Brock
Townsend, Jimmie Floyd,
Dharius Walker and Isaac
Gabrielse.
The Scot foursome of
Powers, Walker, Townsend
and Berends lowered its
school record time in the
4x100-meter relay for the third
time this season by finishing
in 42.99 Saturday. That was
good for fourth place. The
Scots were fifth in the 4x400-
meter relay and sixth in the
4x200-meter relay.
Traverse City West was a
distant fourth with 979 points
ahead of West Ottawa 965,
Battle Creek Lakeview 917,
Holt 801, Kalamazoo Central
775, St. Joseph 680, Byron
Center 672, Woodhaven-
Brownstown 568.5 and
Canton 498.
Rockford handily won the
girls’ title with 1453.5 points.
West Ottawa was second with
1288 and East Kentwood third
with 1206.5 in a field of 14

Recent conversations with the Michigan Department of Transportation
and FTA regulations have all but eliminated the feasibility of Running the
Trolley Around Town in Hastings and Middleville this year. Prohibitions
against designated route stops (Fixed route) and designated stop
times (Fixed route) as well as MDOT’s assessment that the afterhours
operation, without dispatch support, disenfranchises would-be riders
(Open Door requirement) have rendered the campaign impossible to
facilitate. Barry County Transit deeply regrets the end of this popular
