Scots in district
soccer semifinals

The Bulldogs were like
bulldozers going downhill
Wednesday night.
The Byron Center
varsity girls’ soccer team
scored a 3-0 win over the
Caledonia varsity girls’
soccer team in their
MHSAA Division 1 District
Semifinal at Hudsonville
High School.
The Bulldogs pressed
forward throughout the
evening, scoring twice in
the first half to advance to
Friday night’s, June 3,
district final against the
undefeated Hudsonville
Eagles. Hudsonville, the
OK Red Conference
champion this spring,
knocked off West Ottawa
4-0 in the second district
semifinal of the day
Wednesday in Hudsonville.
The Eagles moved their
record to 18-0-2 with that
victory. Bryon Center went
into the district final at
18-2.
Caledonia closes the
season with a 10-5-
record.
Rachel Phelan and
Makenna Lange scored for
the Bulldogs in the first half
of their ballgame.
The final nail in the
Scots’ season was an
unlucky bounce. Byron
Center’s Tess Bainbridge
fired a shot from the top
of the box from right to
left. The low shot glanced
off the far post past the
diving Caledonia keeper
Davanee Balczak and then
hit the downed keeper in
the back and went into thenet.
The Bulldogs kept the
play within 40 yards of the
Fighting Scot net for much
of the second half.
Senior goalkeeper Tara
Robinson got a few minutes
in net for the Scots in the
closing minutes in relief of
Balczak. She is one of
seven seniors on the
Caledonia roster this spring
joined by Tori Woodwyk,
Veronica Foster-Toledano,
Tatum Verburg, Alivia
Logiudice, Taylor Fairchild
and Grace Klein.
Caledonia reached the
district semifinals by
scoring a 6-1 win over
Kalamazoo Central May

announces 2022 cancellation
Crowds of cyclists will
not be circling Barry County
and specifically the
Thornapple Kellogg Schools
campus Fathers Day
weekend this month.
“It is with great regret that
we announce the cancellation
of the 2022 National 24 Hour
Challenge. The board of
directors has met and
determined that we will be
unable to hold the 2022
National 24 Hour Challenge
in a manner true to our
traditional safety standards,”
event organizers shared in a
statement Thursday.
“We realize that this
cancellation comes as a
surprise and at the last minute.
We have been working non-
stop to secure appropriate
safety services for the event,
and we wanted to exhaust
every last option before
cancelling the event.
Unfortunately, our final
option fell through yesterday
and there is truly nothing
more we can do.
“Cancelling the event is
not what any of us would
have wanted, and we fought
as hard as we could to make
the event happen, but this was
beyond our control.”
Full refunds will be
provided to all riders. The
event will not be rolling over
any registrations. Those who
would still like to buy
National 24 Hour Challenge
merchandise the website will
be opening in the next week
that will allow anyone to
purchase items, including this
year’s riders, volunteers, andcrew members t-shirts.
“We share your
disappointment. Just as you
have trained for months, our
volunteers have spent
countless hours preparing for
the event. We sincerely
apologize for the
inconvenience this will
cause, and we ask for your
understanding,” closed the

after three years

Caledonia senior
Landon Wanless is going
back to the state finals for
the first time since helping
the Fighting Scots’ to a
tenth place finish at the
MHSAA Lower Peninsula
Division 1 Boys’ Golf
Finals as a freshman in
2018.
Wanless was third
overall and the top
individual state qualifier
from the MHSAA Division
1 Regional Tournament at
Stonegate Golf Club in
Muskegon Thursday.
Wanless shot a 73 to
lead the Caledonia team to
a fifth-place finish.
Forest Hills Northern
won the team regional title
with a score of 308, one
stroke better than runner-
up Mona Shores’ 309.
Portage Central was third
with a score of 314.
The top three teams
and top three individuals
not on those three teams at
regionals across the state
this week earn spots in the
June 10-11 State Finals.
The MHSAA Lower
Peninsula Division 1
Finals will be held at
Katke on the campus of
Ferris State University in
Big Rapids.
The other two
individual state qualifiers
from the regional at
Stonegate are Byron
Center’s Jack Marzlino
who scored a 74 and Forest
Hills Central’s Joe
Murdock who shot a 75.
Wanless was two underthrough his first nine holes
thanks in part to an eagle
on the 470-yard, par-
number 18 and eight pars.
Caledonia juniors
Jacob Byanski and Sam
Baldwin tied for 11th
overall with 82s
Thursday. The Scots also
got an 85 from freshman
Parker Little. The
Caledonia team was eight
strokes back of the
Portage Central boys.
Hudsonville was
fourth at the regional with
a score of 315 ahead of the
Scots’ 322, Grandville
330, Byron Center 334,
Forest Hills Central 335,
Rockford 342, West
Ottawa 358, Grand Haven
358, East Kentwood 358,
Loy Norrix 360, Jenison
370, Portage Northern 370
and Battle Creek Lakeview
380.
Forest Hills Northern
was led by a 73 from senior
Jack Zubkus, a 77 from
freshman Grant Ofield and
a 78 from senior Dylan
Parker. Toby Bohn, a
senior, added an 80 for the
Huskies.
Mona Shores junior
Nicholas Taylor and
Portage Central junior
Ethan Tiller each shot a 71
to finish atop the individual
standings.
Mona Shores also got a
76 from Chase Knowlton
and 81s from Owen
DeLong and Jeffrey
Lenartowicz. Behind Tiller

Sidell an 81 and Garrett
