Crazy for
little Dusty!
S
hannon Vos says he’s in awe of all
new mums after Th e Block winner
helped deliver his son Dusty in a
“beautiful birth”, which only made
him respect his wife Lisa even more than
on their wedding day.
“I put the gloves on in the delivery
room and I pulled him out,” explains
a still awe-struck Shannon.
“As overwhelming as seeing that is – and
it’s not pretty! – it is a beautiful experience
and I absolutely loved it. It was insane!”
Speedy arrival
Lisa says the birth was so fast – just a two-
hour labour – she was left “baffl ed”.
“I couldn’t quite get my head around it,”
she says. “I was freaking out about labour
beforehand, but because it all came on so
quickly I didn’t have time to worry.”
Dusty Mac Vos arrived at 11.55pm on his
exact due date of December 9 at Sutherland
Hospital in Sydney’s south, weighing 3.33kg
and measuring 52cm. And he soon proved
to have a set of lungs his namesake Dusty
Springfi eld would be proud of!
“He has a 15-minute window between
waking up and screaming the house down
Blockhead Shannon and
wife Lisa welcome their
little boy to the world
for his food laughs Lisa, who adds that
motherhood is every bit as rewarding as
she expected, if a whole lot tougher, even
down to mastering breastfeeding.
“You forget the pain of birth, but then
you’ve got all the other stuff , and that can
be just as painful,” she says. “Breastfeeding
was a major challenge. Trying to work out
what your baby wants is non-stop. It’s just
constant, but it’s also really rewarding.
“I’ve found a side of me I didn’t know
I had. It’s such a nice feeling knowing
someone is so reliant on you – to provide
life to someone is really special. I also feel
very lucky to have a husband who does the
stuff Shannon is willing to do.”
Shannon says he’s fallen hopelessly in
love with “tall and skinny” Dusty, who is
“all legs like his dad”, and at 11 weeks old
is already a “water baby”, splashing around
in the ocean at least twice a week.
“It’s challenging – but it’s also beyond
fulfi lling,” Shannon says of fatherhood.
“One of the
meanings of the
name Dusty is
‘brave soldier’,”
explains Lisa.
“I take my hat off
to Lisa and to all
women who have
kids,” says Shannon.
