A really important thing to consider when
choosing a new colour palette is the
lighting of your room, both natural and
artificial. Choose your new wall colour while
you’re in the room you’ll be painting – that
means you need to get swatches and
samples! Then view the colour at different
times of day. Typically, bright, natural light will
lift a colour in a space, but can wash out the
undertones. “Whereas a darker room with a
warm light can really exaggerate undertones
like yellow,” Wendy says.
With this in mind, how do you know if you
should go for a warm or cool colour?
As well as the natural lighting, consider the
orientation and location of the room. “A cool
colour in a cold room will make it feel stark
and unwelcoming, whereas a warm neutral
will bring more life to the space,” Wendy
says. Also, the size of the room is important;
cool colours recede, so they’ll make a small
space look larger. Conversely, warm colours
can close in a space, making them great for
larger rooms or to create a cosy feel. A
