WHY ARE GUYS...

SO TERRITORIAL

ABOUT GRILLING?
Standing over a fire and watching meat cook
is kind of in our genes—the cavemen did it,
right? It seems natural then that when it’s
time to light up a backyard barbecue, you’ll
often find us crowding around the charcoal,
tongs in hand, holding court.

Manning the grill taps into a lot of our
primal urges: facing a risk (the flaming hot
briquettes), dominating the food chain (take
that, ground chuck), showing off our skills
(witness that perfect sear), and providing for
others (who wants another?). But mostly, it’s
a comfortable place of retreat.
Rather than trying to make small talk—
something we’re not great at—we can gather
around a grill and still feel like we’re bonding,
even if we’re just yakking about which
burgers look overdone. Just like the
cavemen—but with beer.—MATTHEW GOULET
