hhh, working from a
hammock on a tropical
island – sounds like a
dream, doesn’t it? But
it’s a reality for those
making it rain on social
media. Look, don’t be
fooled, it’s no easy feat,
but it’s certainly not
impossible. All you need
is a point of difference, a
great eye and your finger
on the pulse – just ask
the experts! Aussies are
leading the charge across
YouTube, Instagram and
Snapchat, turning their
passion for makeup,
travel, fashion and food
into successful online
businesses. Talk about
acing that side hustle!
Want to know how to
follow their lead? Of
course you do!

1/ Choose
your platform
Are you going to vlog your
life on YouTube or capture
epic f latlays on Instagram?
Either way you’ll need to
decide on a go-to platform.
Don’t put all of your eggs
in one basket, but when it
comes to social media you
need to pick one platform to
focus on to kickstart your
money-making machine.
Later you can introduce a
secondary one like Twitter
or Snapchat to diversify and
fulfil your follower reach
capabilities. Make sure your
media of choice is the best
suited to your audience.

‘You have to be passionate
about what you’re doing.
I believe that success comes
from passion. Instagram
is actually my life that I’m
photographing. I take my
audience on a journey of my
day, from going to breakfast,
to an event... it’s literally all
the things that I do.’ – ELLE

2/ Stay woke
You have to earn the trust
of your followers. We all
know the saying: ‘With
great power comes great
responsibility.’ You need to
stay informed and be across
what’s happening in the
world, regardless of your
brand. Reviewing a trip to
Japan on Instagram while
the country’s suffering from
a natural disaster isn’t going
to go down well. Neither
will promoting a fashion
label on Tumblr that’s been
exposed for underpaying
sweatshop workers. Brands
looking to advertise and
sponsor posts will avoid
controversy at all costs, so
stay informed. Followers
will respect you for leading
discussion on hot topics and
being transparent.

‘Know your audience. Who
are they? Where they are from?
Why do they follow you?
What type of content do they
enjoy most from you? Use this
information to create meaning-
ful and interesting posts that
resonate with things happening
in their lives.’ – RACHEL TEE
TYLER, @RACHELTEETYLER^ >
