AMSTERDAM’S HISTORIC PAST AND HIDDEN DELIGHTS
The locals will tell you that
there’s no better way to see
Amsterdam than by canal
boat and they’re 100 per cent
correct. From the canals you
get a beautiful glimpse into the
local way of life, while enjoying
a running commentary of
the city’s history, politics and
nuances. Whether by day or
by night, floating through the
city is a mustdo experience.
Depending on the time of year
you visit, there are even parties
set up on this beautiful 17th
century waterway.
A lot of the ‘mustsee’
attractions in Amsterdam are
museums, but if you’re not a
history and art kind of person,
don’t let this put you off. The
Rijksmuseum is one of the most
impressive buildings – bothexternally and internally –
you will come across, never
mind the collection it possesses
inside. The research library
here is like something you’d
see in a Harry Potter film, so
be sure to stop by for a quick
picture. While on this side of
town, it’s well worth dropping
by the Van Gogh Museum.
Don’t worry if you’ve spent
the whole day soaking up the
culture inside the Rijksmuseum- this amazing building is even
more stunning by night as the
lights of the city come to life.
If you’re visiting Amsterdam
in winter, there’s even an ice
skating rink set up right in
front of the museum.
Make your way over to
Jordaan neighbourhood for
a much quieter, relaxed pace
of living. You can wander
the canals on foot or bike,
stopping by some of the
small cafes and boutiques
as you go. You’ll also find
the Anne Frank House, a
living museum where the
Frank family hid during the
WWII Nazi occupation.✈
