THE BEST WAY to hop over a log is to
stand up and use the double-blip
technique. However, sometimes you’ll fi nd
yourself stuck and without enough
momentum to stand up, or maybe what
awaits you on the other side is unknown
and launching into a log hop without
peaking over the top could be dangerous.
So here is a technique to use if your front
wheel has made it but your rear is
dragging the chain.
1 / NO SPINNING
Whatever you do, don’t stand up and spin
the rear wheel, as demonstrated in our
main image. All you’re doing is digging a
hole for the next person, wasting precious
energy and wearing out your rear tyre. If
your front wheel is on top of the log but
you’ve stopped and lost momentum and
fi nd yourself sitting, just take a deep
breath, sit down and relax.
2 / LOAD THE REAR
Place your feet on the log your front wheel
is resting on. If your front wheel has fallen
over the log, try and drag it back so it is on
top. This is important because with your
front wheel on top of the log, more weight
or pressure will be on the rear wheel,
rather than the bashplate.
3 / BEND YOUR KNEES
Bend you knees but shuffl e your arse to
the rear of the seat. You’re doing this
because you want to preload the shock
and you want to be in a similar position to
where you would sit if you were about to
seat bounce a triple in supercross. Keep
one fi nger on the clutch and look a few
metres in front of your fender.
4 / ALL IN THE TIMING
This is where it gets tricky. The next part is
all about timing. You want to build your
revs, release the clutch and use that
momentum to roll the rear wheel over the
obstacle. As you begin to accelerate
towards the obstacle while seated, get
ready to use your outriggers (legs) to
unweight the rear-end by standing up.
5 / PUSH THROUGH
Just before the rear wheel hits the log, lift
