your arse off the seat (this is why your
knees need to be bent) and roll off the
throttle, but keep the clutch half way out so
it is hovering on the friction point. Throw
your weight forward and if need be push
through the handlebar but don’t just rev it.
6 / MORE SPEED
Once you feel the rear wheel has climbed
over the log using momentum, you can sit
back down or jump on the footpegs and
ride off. If it’s a big-arse obstacle and you
don’t have enough momentum for the rear
wheel to crawl over the fi rst time, roll back
into position and this time try with more
speed and spring out of the seat, throwing
your weight further forward.

SKILL SET:
Intermediate
GENRE:
Extreme enduro, trailriding
PRACTICE:
Find a few logs or rocks in a paddock
and practice when you know what’s on
the other side and no one’s watching to
apply pressure. Once you’ve got the
timing right, then take it to a hill.
STRENGTH & HEIGHT:
This trick favours the tall. The longer
your outriggers the better chance you
have of stabilising yourself. Strength
through the legs and upper body will
also help it give that last minute push
that is often needed.
WIDOW POTENTIAL:
Medium – don’t whack your nuts
BRAGGING RIGHTS:
Climbing a hill littered with obstacles
while seated will raise eyebrows. You’ll
also look like your hopping obstacles
with ease while your mates wheelspin
out of control.
EJECTOR SEAT
TRY TO MAKE sure you are not still
seated when the rear wheel smashes
into the obstacle. Hitting the log at
speed with the shock compressed
means you will get a big boot up the
backside from the seat and this will
either launch you over the ’bar or knock
you off balance and cause the rear
wheel to spin up. This trick is about
momentum, not brute force and
ignorance.
WATCH THE
REPLAY
THIS TRICK CAN be seen in action every
day thanks to video footage from
events like Erzberg. At Erzberg you’re
constantly hopping obstacles, with
many riders using this technique or
standing over their bikes and helping it
crawl along. On a recent ride, Ben
Grabham did an entire extreme section
sitting down using this technique as he
climbed a rocky hill.
