CLEANING
THE BIKE
Water enters the carburetor when you
are washing the bike so here is a trick
to prevent water from getting in there.
1 Remove the air fi lter and place a
clean rag in the bottom of the airbox to
prevent water from running down into
the carby.
2 Wrap the air fi lter in a clean plastic
bag and then fi t it back in place.
3 Wash the bike and then remove the
fi lter before cleaning it.
4 Once the air fi lter is dry, re-oil it,
remove the rag from the bottom of
the airbox and fi t the clean air fi lter
back into place.
ACTORY RIDE / READERS RIDE / HERITAGE / ACT ON / OAS / BUYERS GUIDE
KTM 50SXs ARE notorious for getting water
in their carburetors. This happens when they
get washed because the air fi lter sits up high
under the seat.
When water gets on the air fi lter it runs
down through the airbox and into the
carburettor. If enough water gets in then it
can stop the bike from starting but, more
commonly, it makes the bike hard to start or
miss and carry on under load.
When there is water in the carby there is
only one option to totally fi x the problem. That
is to remove the carby and give it a good clean
out. Here is a guide on how to do it correctly.
1 JACK ’ER UP
Working on the ground hunched over a small
bike can be disastrous for your back so, if you’ve
got a hoist, stick the bike on it and strap her on
nice and tight.
2 REMOVE SEAT
Start by removing the seat and the fuel tank.
The seat comes off via a speed clip on the back
of the seat and the tank comes off by removing
the fuel hose and the mounting bolt in the
centre of the tank. Sit the tank aside on a clean
bench so that no dirt can enter the fuel tap
spigot.
3 LOOSEN CLAMPS
Loosen the clamps holding the carby in place.
There is one at both ends of the carby. All you
need to loosen them off is a fl atblade
screwdriver. They do not need to be removed
but they do need to be loosened quite a lot.
4 PULL THE BOOT
Pull the airbox boot off the carby. You can pull it
back and push it sideways so it sits up against
the frame and stays out of the way. Then pull
the carby out of the reed blockandloosenthe
bolt in the slide cap where the throttlecable
enters the carby. Remove the slide.
5 REMOVE THE CARB
With the slide removed you cannowremovethe
carby from the bike. It can be fiddlyandthe
carby will only come out one waysodon’trushit
and don’t use force. If you use excessiveforce
you may break something.
6 BRUSH OFF
Once you have the carby out, giveitaspraywith
some carby cleaner and then useabrushto
remove all the built-up dirt andgrimefromall
over the carby. Blow the carbydrywith
compressed air and then placeitonaclean
bench for the next steps.
