May 11: The EU“troika”foreign ministers visited China and attended the
reception marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of China-EU
diplomatic ties at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, Beijing.
May 12: The China-EU Scientific and Technological Strategy Summit was held
in Beijing.
May 26: China and Croatia signed theJoint Declaration for the Establishment
of a Comprehensive Cooperation Partnership between the People's Republic of
China and the Republic of Croatiain Beijing.
June 4: Belgian King Albert II paid a State visit to China.
June 11: China and the EU signed a memorandum for the textiles trade, under
which the EU undertook to terminate investigations against ten types of textiles
from China. The two sides also reached consensus on export of these ten types
of textiles to the EU by the end of 2007.
June 13: A two-day EU Foreign Affairs Ministers’ Meeting was held in
Luxembourg, in which the participants decided to abandon the plan for lifting
the arms embargo on China by the end of June this year and stated that no new
time schedule would be arranged for this issue.
June 17: The EU Summit was concluded, in which the EU released one con-
clusive paper concerning a series of political issues including the active
development of the strategic partnership with China, and they affirmed their
determination to actively develop a strategic partnership with China, hoped to
further enhance comprehensive dialogue and cooperation with China in the
areas of politics, economics and trade, etc.
June 28: China, the EU and four other parties concluded an agreement which
determined that Cadarache, France would be the place to build an international
thermonuclear reactor; this marked the beginning of a new phase of China-EU
cooperation on this strategic science and technology project.
July 14: The President of the European Commission, JoséManuel Barroso, paid
an official visit to China. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with José
Manuel Barroso.
July 15: Chinese President Hu Jintao met with the President of the European
Commission, JoséManuel Barroso, in Beijing. JoséManuel Barroso delivered a
speech entitled“EU-China–Jointly Creating a Brighter Future”at the Chinese
Academy of Social Sciences.
July 21: China and Spain signed theAgreement for Criminal Judicial Assistance
between the People’s Republic of China and the Kingdom of Spainin Beijing.
July 28: China’s general contractor and the European Galileo Joint Undertaking
signed three application project contracts in Beijing, resulting in a substantial
operation of China-EU cooperation on the Galileo Project.
September 5:The 8th China-EUSummitwas held in Beijing. The two sides released
theJoint Declaration of the 8th China-EU Leaders’Meeting,theChina-EU Joint
Declaration on Climate Change, and signed documents for cooperation on trans-
port, environmental protection, space development, the construction of the Beijing
