offshore cruisers may require lights with five

nautical mile visibility. Since it’s impossible for

the average boatie to measure these values, you

need to buy units from a supplier who can certify

that the lights comply with local regulations.

A reputable brand such as Hella Marine has

invested considerable resources into ensuring its

lights meet all the standards, and guarantees the

certification on the packaging. Some imported

brands may claim to meet overseas standards

but may not be certified for New Zealand.

Also, be wary of clear-lens LEDs which

produce either red or green light when powered

rather than by using a coloured lens. The nature

of LED technology means these will change

colour over time, so even if they comply initially

they may degrade to a different tone.

Next – make sure the unit is fully

encapsulated and waterproof to at least IP67

rating. This is more difficult to judge, since

some of the cheaper imports look similar to

the better-quality units. Again, look for the

manufacturer’s warranty and go for a brand

of known provenance and with more than the

legal-minimum one-year warranty.

The decision whether to go with all-plastic

or aluminium casing tends to evoke debate.
