Now let’s deal with getting your own
references. I have a fairly basic DSLR with
a twin lens kit. My longest lens is a 75mm-
300mm zoom which is nothing special. I
have plenty of great photos from all around
the world. I wish I had a better lens, but all
in good time. However, what I have does me
just i ne at the moment. It’s all about attitude
and patience. The following photographs of
a lion, a Himba tribeswoman and a crocodile
are all taken in the “wild” with this lens. It’s
all about putting yourself in the position to
take advantage of life as it happens. Now
I'm going to show you two photographs and
I want you to guess which one I am most
proud of.
Both of these photos (Etosha Halali
and Benin Penjari)were taken in Africa and
both in the wild. If you knew where I was
going with this, you probably worked out it
was the single elephant in the long grass
despite that fact that you can barely see it.
It was the best view I saw of an elephant
in my entire trip to West Africa, whereas
I broke my record for elephant numbers
when I went to southern Africa, to places
like Namibia and Botswana. Etosha National
Park in Namibia af orded many perfect
opportunities to get photos of elephants
in large numbers, and to get close enough
to get highly detailed shots of their eyes.
However, I didn’t have to work for these
pictures. An overland bus delivered me to
the park and at one of the fancy hotels
