(where I camped) I walked a few metres to
a man-made waterhole with an amphitheatre
of seats around it and watched as thirty-
three elephants drank and frolicked. I even
had an ice cold cider in my hand while I
watched.
Contrast that with the lousy shot of the
elephant in Penjari National Park in the north
of Benin, West Africa. To get there we had
to drive for two days along roads that were
so full of potholes that we often couldn’t go
faster than walking pace, witnessing as we
went the remains of countless truck and car
crashes. When we got to the park, there had
been so much rain that the grass was higher
than a truck. In addition, with so much water
around, the animals had dispersed to all
corners of the park rather than congregating
around waterholes. Hence, we barely saw
