29er Inland Champs
A close nish for the 44-boat eet at the
29er Ovington Inland Championship at
Graam Water SC saw Hayling’s Freddie
Peters/Elliott Wells pipping club mates
Nick Robins/Billy Vennis-Ozanne on
countback to win the title.
Shiy winds below 10 knots made for
tight racing. ere was little in it between
the top ve boats in the eight-race series,
with only eight points separating these
teams. ird overall were Pierce Harris/
Ale Cogger (Windermere School); rst
girls: Bella Fellows/Anna Sturrock
(Yealm/Loch Tummel/Royal Tay); rst
juniors: Harris/Cogger; rst mixed team:
Iain Bird/Anna Rowe (HISC/Island Barn).

Wayfarer finale
and Travellers
Going into the eighth and
final event of the UK
Wayfarer Association
Craftinsure National Circuit
and Travellers Series 2017,
four boats had the potential
to be on the overall
podium. A total 20 boats
took to the water in mixed
conditions at Bough Beech.
Mike McNamara and Simon
Townsend (Rollesby Broad)
counted three bullets for
the overall win, with Martin
and Donna Rouse-Collen
(Upper Thames) second on
countback from locals Guy
and Tom Marks.
McNamara-Townsend also
won the Hartley Boats
Trophy for the Craftinsure
National Circuit Series. The
Wayfarer Travellers Trophy
for the best results in all
eight events was won by
Wilson and his crews
Wilson/Rusbridger.

South East Area
Enterprise Series
The South East Area
Enterprise Series saw open
meetings at nine clubs with
57 boats competing,.
The South East Area
Championship at
Papercourt on a gusty
October day saw Ann
Jackson and Alan Skeens
(Burghfield) demonstrating
consistent speed and boat
handling to win ahead of

Paul Young (Midland) and
local David Hodgson.
The Thames Valley Bowl
(best four results from the
SE series) went to David
Beaney and Alison White
(Wembley). The River
Trophy (best three results
from the five river
meetings) also went to
Beaney-White.

A day for the ladies
at Lightning finale
The Rum and Mince Pie
season finale for the
Lightning 368 fleet at West
Oxfordshire SC also
incorporated the inland
championships.
In a light northerly, Penny
Yarwood (Up River) took
overall victory with a race
to spare, ahead of local
sailors Caroline Hollier and
Sophie Kitching.
Yarwood was also awarded
the Bernard Patterson
trophy as the winner of the
traveller series, with second
going to club mate Simon
Hopkins and third to Hollier.

420 End of Seasons
Hatty Morsley and Pippa
Cropley gave a masterclass
of light wind sailing to
claim victory in a 30-boat
fleet at the 420 End of
Season Championship,
hosted at Grafham Water
SC, with an impressive four
wins overall from the
seven-race series.

RC44 Champs Tour
With no racing on the final
day of the RC44 Calero
Marinas Cup in the normally
windy Canary Islands, John
Bassadone’s Peninsula
Petroleum claimed the last
event of the season, the
Gibraltar-based team
including Italian tactician
Vasco Vascotto. Second was
Vladimir Prosikhin’s Team
Nika with Chris Bake’s Team
Aqua third. Slovenia’s Igor
Lah meanwhile with British
tactician Adrian Stead on
board Team CEEREF,
finished fourth and claimed
their second consecutive
RC44 Championship Tour.

Solution Inlands
In the Solution fleet at the
Ovington Inlands, Christian
Smart (Pembrokeshire)
retained the title for the
fourth year running, with
Sam Davy (Hykeham)
second and also taking the
Traveller Series 2017.

Laser Masters at
Queen Mary
Despite forecasts threatening
gale force winds, 61 helms
enjoyed 10-15 knots at the Laser
Performance Masters’ end of
season nale at Queen Mary SC.
In the Standard Fleet, local
favourite Orlando Gledhill won
the rst two races, with Alan
Davis winning the third race.
On day two, Orlando took the
title, despite the attentions of
Davis, who nished second
overall ahead of Le Grice.
In the Radial Fleet, Masters
world champion and coach Jon
Emmett took three bullets to
lead overnight. Emmett gave a
debrief, Olympic medallist Lijia
Xu gave a talk, and there was a
Laser Performance-sponsored
dinner and a jazz evening.
Emmett took three wins the
next day for the title, with
Masters European champion Ian
Jones second, Rob Cage third.
First lady was Alison Stevens.

Draycote’s day two dashed by wintry snow
Peter Gray, Rich Pepperdine and Simon Forbes
won the Datchet Flyer in their National 18.
A 72-boat eet battled it out in round two of
the GJW Direct SailJuice Winter Series. With a 10
knot westerly, the leeward mark was close to the
clubhouse for the spectators. Local Wayfarer
experts Andrew and Tom Wilson took the
handicap win in race one. Andrew Snell’s K1

keelboat’s carried him to victory in race two, with
Alistair Goodwin’s Laser in second and Gray’s
National 18 in third. Snell also won race three,
with Gray second and Goodwin third.
With a building breeze and overnight snow
forecast, the non-discardable nal race scheduled
for the second day was cancelled leaving Gray-
Pepperdine-Forbes the overall winners.

Students set Fleet


Nationals record
A record entry for the British University
Fleet Racing Championships saw over
230 student sailors from 25 universities
competing at Draycote Water SC, hosted
by Warwick University SC. e 60 plus
eet of Fireys saw Matt Whiteld/Bobby
Hewitt of Southampton taking the title
from Giles Kuzyk/George Zavos (B’ham),
with Peter Ballantine/Tom Daggitt
(So’ton) third on countback.
e Fast Handicap champions were
29er sailors Crispin Beaumont/Oli
Aldridge (Southampton) with teammates
Gus Dixon-James Leetch, also in a 29er, in
second, and Will Taylor/Harry Odling
(RS200, Plymouth) third.
