MOST WINS OF THE BERLIN MARATHON
BY AN INDIVIDUAL (FEMALE)
Aberu Kebede of Ethiopia won her third Berlin
Marathon in 2 016, having previously triumphed
in 2010 and 2012. She matched the tally set by
Jutta von Haase (GDR/now DEU – 1974, 1976,
1979), Renate Kokowska (POL – 1988, 1991, 1993)
and Uta Pippig (DEU – 1990, 1992, 1995).

In 2016, Patrick Downes and Adrianne Haslet completed the Boston Marathon
just three years after losing limbs in the terrorist bombing of the 2013 race.

Fastest time to run
the Tokyo Marathon (female)
On 26 Feb 2017, Sarah Chepchirchir (KEN)
completed the Tokyo Marathon in Japan in
2 hr 19 min 47 sec. In just her third competitive
marathon, she eclipsed her personal best by
more than four minutes. Chepchirchir beat the
previous Tokyo best of 2 hr 21 min 27 sec, set by
Helah Kiprop (KEN) on 28 Feb 2016.
On the same day as Chepchirchir’s record run,
Wilson Kipsang (KEN) achieved the fastest time
to run the Tokyo Marathon (male): 2 hr 3 min
58 sec. On a redesigned course, he smashed
the previous best by 1 min 44 sec.

Marathon Majors marathon
Between 2006 and 2 015, Hermann Achmüller
(ITA) completed the Tokyo, Boston, London,
Chicago, New York and Berlin marathons in a
total aggregate time of 14 hr 16 min 32 sec.

Most barefoot half marathons
run on consecutive days
Salacnib “Sonny” Molina (USA) completed
11 barefoot half marathons on 8–18 Sep 2016.
The orthopaedic nurse travelled across
the USA in search of races, eventually
running 18 official half marathons in
30 days – all barefoot.

Most wheelchair
New York City Marathon
wins (female)
Tatyana McFadden (USA,
b. RUS) has won the New York
City Marathon five times, in
2010 and 2013–16. This equals the
mark set by Edith Wolf-Hunkeler (CHE), who
came home first in 2004–05 and 2007–09.
McFadden, who was born with spina bifida,
competes in the T54 class and is a seven-time
Paralympic gold medallist.
She also shares the record for most
consecutive wheelchair London Marathon
wins (female), having won the race four times
in 2013–16. This is the same as Italy’s Francesca
Porcellato, who triumphed in 2003–06.

FASTEST HALF MARATHON (FEMALE)
On 1 Apr 2017, Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei won
the Prague Half Marathon in the Czech Republic
in a time of 1 hr 4 min 52 sec. En route to victory,
she set records for the fastest road-run 10 km
(female) at 30 min 4 sec; 15 km at 45 min
37 sec; and 20 km at 1 hr 1 min 25 sec. It was
only Jepkosgei’s fifth race over the distance.

Eritrea’s Ghirmay
Ghebreslassie
(b. 14 Nov 1995)
won the men’s New
York Marathon aged
20 years 358 days.
Ghebreslassie is

Championship
marathon (male),
having taken gold in
Beijing, China, aged
19 years 281 days
on 22 Aug 2015.
