feel like leaving it all behind and going somewhere
to enjoy vacations!””
Listening to this, I said to the farmer, “So, do you
intend to become a monarch? ...Sitting on the
glorious throne and issuing orders?” The farmer
ruminated for a while and said, “Oh! That isn't less
troublesome either! At present, it's just the
responsibility of myself and my family that I have to
bear. Being a monarch, I will have to carry the
burden of the whole kingdom. I have heard that the
populace is equivalent to the king's progeny. Oh!
Who will be on guard of such a gargantuan
populace? And, in that too, every morning I will
have to be present on the throne... take notice of
state problems, apperceive the cases, and pass on
the judgements. In between, periodic visits will
have to be paid. Alas! It would be stodgy to be
indulging into all that on a routine basis.”
Indeed Shiva, in those simple words, the farmer
said something really worth contemplating.
Thereafter, I asked him, “So, my farmer brother, then
what is your approach of dealing with this repetitive
and boring task of farming?” The farmer replied,
“What is there to ponder upon? The work that
destiny has given me, I will accomplish it with
persistence, conviction, and faith.”
Shiva was silently listening, as Gurudev was
speaking. After a little while, the Master paused. He
visually examined Shiva, and said, “O Shiva! I was
just lost in my memoirs and kept speaking about
them... I did not even hear your story. Tell me, how
are you? Why is your face sluggish? What has
happened?”
Shiva fell into the lotus feet of his Gurudev and
said, “What should I say Gurudev? There is now
nothing left to say or hear! Your words have settled
the turmoil of my mind. The dilemma with which I
came here, you have cleared it all.”
A divine and mischievous smile shone on the
countenance of the Master. He said, “Why? Is your

confusion also similar to that of mine and the
farmer? Mundane life! Are you also going through
the same dilemma?”
Shiva immediately said, “Yes, Gurudev! War after
war! How long? For how long will I have to breathe
in between these attacks and explosions? With all
this, I was fed up!”
Gurudev– So, now do you understand something?
Or will I have to explain all the 18 chapters of the
Bhagavad Gita again, my Partha (name used by Lord
Krishna to address Arjuna)?
Shiva– No Master! In the verses you just stated, my
entire Gita has been actualised and effectuated. I
have understood that a common farmer or a
monarch– all are tied to follow their assigned
Karma. Even the Great Almighty in your form cannot
take a sabbatical from his duties! Then, who am I? It
is favourable for me to do what you have chosen me
for... Be sincere in implementing that! Devote
myself to it wholeheartedly!
Keep moving on, O man!
It may be near when it seems so far;
So, stick to the fight.
When you've the hardest hit,
It's when things seem worst,
that you must not quit. ||
