Darter
Binomial Name: Anhinga melanogaster
The Darter is an uncommon resident aquatic birdof Bangladesh. It is also called snake-bird locally
because of its long snake-like neck. Roams inChittagong, Dhaka, Khulna, Rajshahi and Sylhet
rivers, lakes, haors, bels, ponds or lagoons.Commonly seen singly, in pairs or in isolated flocks.
Fish is their main food. They dive into shallow water
and catch fish with long knife-like beaks. Duringthe breeding season from June to December, they
build nests on the branches of large trees nearwater and lay their eggs.
